ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's baseball team dropped its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at Quincy, 6-4 on Friday afternoon at QU Stadium in Quincy, Ill. The Flyers are 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the GLVC while the Hawks are 4-1, 1-0 GLVC.
"I thought we fought hard all game long, but we just dug too big of a hole early on and couldn't quite break through," Lewis head baseball coach
Tim McDonough said. "We had opportunities to score but Quincy made plays when they needed too.
"I'm proud of how our bullpen kept us in the game and we had the go-ahead run at the plate in the ninth and that's all you can ask for in that situation."
The game started well for Lewis as
Anthony Cavalieri (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) homered to left with one out in the top of the first.
Quincy answered scoring four times in the bottom of the inning highlighted by Michael Nielsen's two-run single through the left side of the infield and Zach Park's double to right center. Nielsen scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.
The Flyers got a run back in the second as
Michael O'Brien (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) doubled down the left field line to drive in
Austin Tittle (Lemont, Ill./Lemont).
The Hawks regained their lead thanks to an unearned run in the third inning and added another run in the fifth on Brock Boynton's infield single to short that scored Nielsen.
Lewis cut into the lead in the sixth as O'Brien drove in his second run of the contest with another double down the left field line that scored
Joe Preusser (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice).
The Flyers brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth as
Julian Everett (Frankfort, Ill/Lincoln Way East) reached on an error by the second baseman that scored
Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill./St. Laurence) and put runners on first and second for
Max Warren (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville). Dalton Overstreet retired Warren on strikes to end the game.
