ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- Lewis University's top-ranked women's volleyball team remained unbeaten with back-to-back wins on Saturday at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers (11-0, 11-0 GLVC) kicked off the day with a straight-sets victory over William Jewell (0-13, 0-12 GLVC) and then concluded it with a sweep of Lindenwood (6-5, 6-5 GLVC) in the evening.
Lewis 3, William Jewell 0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-22)
The game went back and forth to start the opening set with Lewis and William Jewell matching each other, point for point. The Flyers pulled away halfway through the set at 15-9, but the Cardinals answered back with a 6-0 run to tie the game.
Lewis responded with a 6-0 run of their own late in the set to close it out and win 25-20, following a kill by
Bella Ray (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic).
The Cardinals led the Flyers by as many as two in the first half of the middle stanza, but Lewis got going after kills by
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) and
Gisela Bode (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie) to take the frame 25-22.
The Flyers led by as much as seven with their steady attacking in set three, but William Jewell utilized a 9-4 run to close within one following kills from Jorey Luebbert and Katie Paine. The Cardinals came up short in their efforts to extend the match as the Flyers finished off the sweep with a 25-22 set victory.
Ray led Lewis will nine kills and was followed by Venema with six. The Flyers hit .265 recording 43 kills against 13 errors in a 113 total attacks. The Flyers posted a total of 11 blocks and
Ally Hickey (Granger, Ind./Penn) recorded a team-high of eight digs.
Lewis 3, Lindenwood 0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-22)
In their second match of the day, Lewis controlled the first half of the opening set leading by as much as six, but the Lions turned things around with a 7-0 run to take a 16-15 lead. The two sides traded the next 11 points and were tied at 21 when the Lions scored two of the next three points to take a 23-22 lead and forced the Flyers to take a timeout. After the break,
Amanda Greening (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) and
Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) combined for the final three kills of the set to win 25-23.
Lewis pulled away early in the second frame, leading at 12-4, thanks to several miscues by the Lions. The Flyers capitalized on the offensive miscues and controlled the rest of the set, on its way to a 25-18 victory.
Lindenwood led 21-18 near the end of the match but the Flyers sealed their second win of the day closing the match on a 7-1 run, to win the set 25-22 and the match.
Greening,
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg) and
Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) each had seven kills in the contest while
Natalie Stefanski (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet West) added six kills. The Flyers hit .255 in the match, tallying 37 kills on 98 attempts.
Lauren Stenman (Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul) and Haley Soberalski led the team in assists with 15 each and
Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) recorded a match-high 22 digs.
Lewis is on the road against Maryville and Missouri S&T, next Saturday, March 20, in St. Louis, Missouri, at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
