Lewis’ Bats Held In Check By Greyhounds

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team was held to just two runs and seven hits combined as it was swept in a doubleheader by 13th ranked Indianapolis on Sunday afternoon at the Lewis Softball Field. The Flyers fall to 10-9, 3-5 GLVC on the season while the Greyhounds improve to 11-2, 4-0 GLVC.

Game 1 – UIndy 5 Lewis 2

Lewis struck first in the opener with a run in the first inning. Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) led off the game with a double to right and scored on Jessica Lofthouse's (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) single back up the middle just two batters into the game. That would be all the Flyers got in the frame as Hallie Waters retired the next three hitters to limit the damage.

The Hounds took the lead in the second on Taylor Danielson's two-run homer right which also scored Emily O'Connor. UIndy added to its lead in the third as Gianni Iannantone hit a home run off the glove of Meghan Bontrager (Milford, Ind./Northridge) in center to make it 3-1. Bontrager gave it a good effort but slammed into the fence when she tried to catch it and couldn't hang on.

The Greyhounds added two more in the fifth on Iannantone's single to center and O'Connor's single to left to extend the lead to 5-1.

Lewis had a chance to tie the game in the seventh loading the bases with one out but only got one run as Taylor grounded into a fielder's choice to short to drive in Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee).

The Flyers were outhit in the opener 8-6 and were led by Serena with two hits while Taylor, Lofthouse, Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) and Olivia Magaldi (Mishawka, Ind./Penn) had a hit apiece. Katie David (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) got the start in the circle allowing five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and took the loss to fall to 3-4 on the year. Payton Wuske (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) worked the final two innings allowing just one walk.

Game 2 – UIndy 8 Lewis 0 6 innings
UIndy jumped on top in the second inning of game two scoring a pair of unearned runs on Haylie Foster's double to center scoring O'Connor and Lexy Rees. The Hounds added to its lead with two more runs in the third on O'Connor's single to center.

Kenzee Smith held Lewis hitless for the first 3.2 innings until David broke up the no-hitter with a single to right. She would be left stranded though as Smith struck out Serena to end the inning.

UIndy tacked on three more runs in the fifth highlighted by Foster's two-run single up the middle and Brooke Montgomery's single to short. The Hounds scored their final run of the game in the sixth as Danielson led off the inning with a homer to right.

Lewis was unable to get to Smith as she held the Flyer bats in check allowing the one hit and struck out 12 in the contest to improve to 4-0 on the season. Wuske got the start in game two and allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits with three strikeouts in three innings pitched to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Lewis continues its nine-game homestand on Thursday (March 25) hosting Saint Xavier in a non-conference doubleheader at the Lewis Softball Field beginning at 2 p.m.
