ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Lewis University's baseball team defeated Missouri-St. Louis, 11-0 in seven innings in the series finale on Sunday afternoon in St. Louis, Mo. The Flyers even their record at 8-8 overall and 6-6 in the GLVC while the Tritons fall to 4-13, 2-8 GLVC. Lewis completed the four-game series winning three of the four contests.
"It was good to see our offense put pressure on their defense and I thought we did a good job taking advantage of UMSL's mistakes," Lewis head baseball coach
Tim McDonough said. "Defensively, we played a clean game on a difficult day with the high winds.
"Overall, it's always nice when you can win a series on the road in the GLVC," McDonough said.
The Flyers sent 12 batters to the plate in the second inning scoring six runs on five hits and took advantage of two Triton errors.
Joe Preusser (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice) doubled home the first two runs of the contest.
Michael O'Brien (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) followed with a two-run single to drive in Preusser and
Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin). O'Brien scored on an error by the third baseman and then
Max Warren (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) capped the scoring with a single to score
Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill./St. Laurence).
Lewis added to its lead in the third inning with two runs on a hit and another error.
Jackson Dvorak (New Lenox, Ill./Providence Catholic) drove in the first run with a fielder's choice to short and later in the inning Preusser scored on an error by the second baseman.
The Flyers put the game away in the seventh scoring three runs on two hits and an error. Preusser led of the inning with a triple and O'Brien walked. With one out, O'Brien stole second and then Dvorak drove both runs in with a single. Dvorak scored later in the inning on an error by the second baseman.
Lewis outhit UMSL 11-6 in the contest with Preusser recording three hits while Warren added two. Dvorak drove in three runs while Preusser and O'Brien had two RBI each.
Jonathon Hanscom (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) threw a complete game six-hit shutout for his first collegiate win. He struck out six and walked only two on just 84 pitches.
"Jonathon was in complete control today and he's starting to mature as a pitcher," McDonough said. "We're going to need him to continue to develop and give efforts like he did today."
The Flyers return to Brennan Field on Thursday (April 1) hosting McKendree in the first of a four-game series at 2 p.m. Thursday's game starts a nine-game homestand for Lewis.
