ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's soccer team scored early and held a halftime lead over Indianapolis but ultimately fell 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers fall to 1-3 overall and in the GLVC while the Greyhounds move to 3-0 both overall and in the conference.
Lewis struck first in the 10th minute capitalizing on a UIndy turnover. The Hounds tried to play it back to the keeper, but it deflected off of him and
Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) won the race for the loose ball and tapped it into an open goal for his second goal of the season.
UIndy had a chance to tie the game in the 22nd minute but
Will Maurice (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) denied Michael Tselios to keep the Flyers in front at halftime.
The Greyhounds had a chance to take the lead in the 60th minute as Cole Rainwater sent a shot from the left wing towards the open goal but Maurice was able to scramble back and prevent the ball from crossing the goal line.
UIndy scored the tying goal two minutes later as Rainwater scored off a cross from Jeremy Fechtman inside the six-yard box for his second of the season.
The Flyers had a chance to regain the lead as Baumann dribbled down the left-hand side and crossed a ball into the six-yard box but was unable to connect with anyone as the ball went through the penalty area.
The Hounds took the lead in the 65th minute as Alejandro Steinwascher scored off a cross from Kendall Allen and then 20 seconds later it was Steinwascher scoring again with an assist from Michael Tselios.
Lewis is back at home next Sunday hosting Illinois Springfield at 2:30 p.m.
