ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Lewis University baseball team dropped a pair of games to No. 2 Lindenwood, 13-5 and 16-5, Sunday (April 11) at the Lou Bock Complex in games that were moved from Lewis due to weather. The Flyers fall to 14-10 overall on the season, 12-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Lindenwood moves to 14-2 overall, 10-2 in the GLVC.
Michael O'Brien (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and
Max Warren (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) each had three hits on the day to lead the Flyers, while O'Brien scored three times and Warren drove home three runs.
Game 1 – Lindenwood 13 Lewis 5
The Lions jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the seven-inning contest before O'Brien homered to left field in the bottom of the first, scoring
Joe Preusser (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice).
Lindenwood tacked on two more runs in the second inning to take a 7-2 lead and added another in the top of the third inning for an 8-2 advantage.
Lewis scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on a Warren single, scoring
Julian Everett (Frankfort, Ill/Lincoln Way East). Warren made it an 8-4 game in the sixth on a solo home run.
The Lions added five more runs in the seventh inning before
Jackson Dvorak (New Lenox, Ill./Providence Catholic) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Warren (2 RBI) and Preusser each had two hits, while O'Brien had two RBI. Jacob Thompson (3-0) picked up the win for the Lions, going four innings, allowing three runs on five hits.
Michael Sclafani (Oak Brook, Ill./Montini Catholic) (2-1) had the loss, allowing four earned runs on three hits in an inning.
Game 2 – Lindenwood 16 Lewis 5
The Lions jumped out to a 13-0 advantage with two runs in the second and sixth innings and nine runs in the seventh inning.
Lewis got on the board in the bottom of the seventh with four runs as
Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill./St. Laurence) drove home O'Brien on a sacrifice fly,
Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) singled home Dvorak, Warren doubled to score Everett and
Troy Hajdukovic (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) drove in Barry on a groundout.
After a Lindenwood run in the top of the eighth, Lewis answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning as Dvorak drove home O'Brien on a sacrifice fly. Lindenwood added two more runs in the ninth inning for the game's final score.
O'Brien tallied two hits and two runs in the game to lead the Flyer offense. Tyler Cassmeyer (3-0) earned the win, going 6.1 innings, allowing six hits and four runs, two earned, while Johnathan Hanscom (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing nine hits and four runs, three earned, in six innings, striking out six.
Lewis travels to Evansville Friday (April 16) for the start of a four-game series with Southern Indiana, with the game starting at 6 p.m.
