ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- Lewis University's women's soccer team dropped its season finale to Lindenwood, 3-1, on Friday afternoon at Hunter Stadium. The Flyers end their season at 5-7-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), while the Lions improve to 9-3-2 also in the GLVC.
Lindenwood was quick on its feet from the kickoff as Kaleigh Kastberg recorded back-to-back shots but both were turned away by
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England/) at the net.
Courtney Sengstock (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) and
Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) tallied two consecutive attempts in the 16th minute of the match, but they were unsuccessful to put Lewis up against the Lions.
The Flyers were outshot by the Lions in the first 45 minutes of play, 10-2, and Lindenwood had four shots on goal to just one shot on goal for Lewis.
In the 51st minute, Sengstock broke the scoreless tie scoring her fourth goal of the season after the Lions committed an error on defense, giving the Flyers the lead.
Lewis was unable to hold on to the lead as Maggie Weller scored the equalizer nearly 10 minutes for Lindenwood with an assist from Mia Corrigan.
The Lions took the lead in the 67th minute as Jill Wipke netted her first goal of the match into the lower-left corner with an assist by Alaina White.
The Flyers had no answers to the fast-paced offense of Lindenwood as Wipke added an insurance goal with less than 10 minutes to play coming off a corner kick by Corrigan.
Lewis was outshot by the Lions, 15-10 in the contest and 7-4 in shots on goal. Lindenwood had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks in the contest.
Sengstock led the Flyers with five shots in the contest while Clark made four saves in goal.
