EAST PEORIA, Ill. -- Lewis University women's volleyball team fell to Missouri S&T at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, 3-1 (18-25, 21-25, 25-19, 18-25), on Saturday evening at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria, Ill. The Flyers conclude their season at 17-2 while the Miners improve to 14-6.
The Flyers started the match with three straight blocks, but the Miners stayed within range as Jordan Burton got things going on their offense. Missouri S&T capitalized on a 5-0 run midway through the set behind kills by Payton Gannaway to let the Miners take the opening set, 25-18.
Looking to even things up with the Miners, the Flyers were led by
Amanda Greening (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) to keep them within striking distance early in the set. After a kill by
Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg), the Miners answered back with three consecutive points by Burton to regain the lead at 16-13.
Lewis was unable to come back with an attack of their own as Missouri S&T approached set point to have a 2-0 advantage. Greening was able to save a set point to keep the Flyers alive, but it was cut short after an attack error, closing the set at 25-21.
In the third frame, both teams went back and forth as they matched each other point for point. The Flyers pulled away halfway through the set on a kill by
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg).
The Miners were looking to close the gap to sweep the Flyers but Schlechte and
Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) kept the momentum, allowing Lewis to hold on to the lead to take the set, 25-19.
Continuing from their strong finish in the third, the Flyers led the Miners, 12-9, but a kill by Burton opened up a 4-0 run to put them in front. Lewis had no answer to the strong offense of Missouri S&T as the errors allowed the Miners to pull away and end the match, 25-18.
The Flyers hit .179 in the match, recording 48 kills on 151 attempts while the Miners hit .266 with 64 kills on 173 attempts.
Greening led Lewis with a team-high of 13 kills followed by Van Loo and Schlechte with nine. Jaime Poppen tallied a game-high of 24 digs.
The Miners were led by Gannaway with 25 kills, followed by Burton with 15. Meiko Pearson recorded 22 digs for Missouri S&T.
