Flyers Fall In Series Finale At Southern Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Lewis University's baseball team held a 7-0 after four and a half innings but ultimately fell 8-7 at Southern Indiana on Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field in Evansville, Ind. The Flyers drop to 15-13, 13-11 GLVC while the Screaming Eagles improve to 19-13, 15-9 GLVC.

Lewis jumped on top in the second inning scoring two runs on three hits. Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) drove in the first run with a double to right to score Jackson Dvorak (New Lenox, Ill./Providence Catholic) and then Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill./St. Laurence) followed with a single back up the middle to score Barry.

The Flyers added two more in the third on an RBI single from Anthony Cavalieri (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) who singled through the left side of the infield scoring Julian Everett (Frankfort, Ill/Lincoln Way East) from second. Cavalieri scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Dvorak.

Lewis tacked on three more runs in the fourth as Cavalieri drove in two runs with a single through the left side of the infield with the bases loaded as Austin Tittle (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) and Max Warren (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) scored while Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) scored on a fielding error by the left fielder on the play.

Jonathan Hanscom got the ball for the start in the series finale and set down the first nine hitters he faced before allowing a pair of singles in the fourth. He avoided any damage in the frame thanks to a double play but USI got to him in the fifth scoring three runs on a hit and an error.

Bryce Krizan drove in the first two runs with a single back up the middle and later in the inning scored on Ethan Hunter's sacrifice fly to center.

The Screaming Eagles drew closer in the seventh as Hunter hit a three-run homer to left center with two out in the frame scoring Krizan and Kobe Stephens.

USI scored twice in the eighth to take the lead. Gavin McLarty drove in the tying run with a single to left to score Michael Conner and later in the inning Stephens reached on a fielding error by Michael O'Brien (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) which would've ended the inning but instead allowed Manny Lopez to score the go-ahead run.

The Flyers got the tying run on base in the ninth but were unable to bring him around.

Lewis outhit the Screaming Eagles 12-7 in the contest and were led by Cavalieri, O'Brien, Barry and Rios with two hits apiece. The Flyers were unable to solve USI's Carter Stamm as he held their bats in check over the final six innings allowing an unearned run on four hits.

Hanscom pitched the first 6.2 innings allowing four runs, two earned, on four hits with eight strikeouts against three walks. Tyler Talbot (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) allowed two runs on one hit in 0.1 innings of work. Matt Verdun (Homer Glen, Ill./St. Rita) took the loss allowing two unearned runs on two hits and didn't record an out in his appearance.

Lewis takes a break from conference play hosting Parkside in a single nine-inning game on Wednesday (April 21) at 2 p.m. at Brennan Field.
