ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against Rockhurst 5-1 and 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Lewis Softball Field. The Flyers fall to 19-14, 10-10 GLVC while the Hawks improve to 18-12, 11-9 GLVC.
Rockhurst scored first in the opener on Emily Clark's solo home run to center with two outs in the first.
Lewis tied the game in its half of the second as
Katie David (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) helped her own cause with a home run to center.
The Hawks took the lead scoring four times in the fifth. With two one and two out Josie Lindemann singled through the left side of the infield to score Jaden Santoni with the go-ahead run. Lauren Marks hit a three-run homer to center two pitches later to make it 5-1.
The Flyers were unable to solve Rockhurst's Lexie Storrer in the opener as she held Lewis to just two hits while striking out six in six innings pitched to improve to 13-4.
David suffered the loss allowing five runs on five hits with eight strikeouts in the complete game effort to fall to 10-6 on the season.
The Hawks struck first in the second game scoring a run in the second inning. Marks led off the inning with a double to right and scored on Maya Gallagher's double to right center. Rockhurst added two more runs in the third inning on Lindemann's two-run homer to right center.
Lewis got those two runs back in the fifth on
Cierra Taylor's (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) two-run homer left field for her third home run of the season.
The Hawks tacked on an insurance run in the sixth as Lindemann drove in her second run of the game with a single through the left side of the infield scoring Shelby Winkelman.
The Flyers had the tying runs in scoring position with one out in the sixth, but they were left strand as a strikeout and a fly out to left ended the inning.
Lewis finished with five hits in the nightcap with Taylor recording two of those while Kavalauskas, David and
Olivia Magaldi (Mishawka, Ind./Penn) had a hit apiece.
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) took the loss in game two allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three and walking six in four innings pitched to fall to 5-3 on the season.
The Flyers return to the diamond next Saturday as they travel down to Bolivar, Mo., to take on Southwest Baptist in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
