Flyers Defeat Maryville, 12-8 For Second Straight Victory

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's lacrosse team defeated Maryville, 12-8 for its second straight on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers move to 4-6, 2-3 GLVC while the Saints drop to 1-8, 1-4 GLVC.

Maryville scored the first goal of the contest as Katie Von Mecklenburg scored an unassisted goal less than five minutes into the contest.

The lead would be short lived though as Lewis scored five goals in the span of less than seven minutes to take a 5-1 lead. Paige Bracey (Apex, N.C./Apex) scored three of the five goals in that spurt while Skylar Lucich (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) and Alyson Jines (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley High School) had one apiece.

The Saints cut the lead to 5-2 on Julia Banfield's goal with less than 17 minutes to play in the opening half but the Flyers came right back 1:36 later as Meltonique Bowen (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Flanagan) scored on an unassisted goal for her 11th of the season.

Maryville scored the final two goals of the half to cut Lewis' lead to 6-4 at the intermission.

The Saints scored the first goal of the second half to cut the Flyer advantage to 6-5 on Jessie Hynes goal early in the frame.

Lewis got back-to-back goals from Bracey and Paige Zahler (Verona, Wis./Verona) to extend its lead to 8-5.

Skylar Jolie scored an unassisted goal to make it 8-6 but that was the closest they got as the Flyers scored three straight goals to take its largest lead of the afternoon on back-to-back goals from Lindsey Traub (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard High School).

Lewis outshot Maryville 32-20 in the contest and put 23 shots on goal compared to 14 for the Saints. Bracey led the way with four goals in the contest while Traub and Lucich added two goals each. Bowen won 11 draw controls and scooped up three ground balls. Brigid Fornek (Lawrenceville, Ga./Grayson) made six saves in goal and scooped up four ground balls.

The Flyers play their final home game of the regular season on Thursday (April 22) hosting McKendree at 4 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
