ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Lewis' men's soccer team lost to the fifth ranked and top seeded Indianapolis Greyhounds 2-0 on Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament at Lindenwood's Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo.
UIndy (13-0-3) had a couple of scoring chances in the 12th and 13th minutes but both attempts were saved by
Will Maurice (Minooka, Ill./Minooka).
The Flyers had a chance in the 22nd minute but
Jimmy Mwanga's (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) attempt was saved by Dimitrios Karousos.
The Greyhounds had another chance in the 25th minute but Maurice stopped Alejandro Steinwascher's attempt.
UIndy outshot Lewis 7-4 in the first half including 3-1 in shots on goal.
Mwanga had another chance early in the second half but was once again turned away by Karousos.
Steinwascher had another attempt in the 59th minute but his shot was saved by Maurice.
The Hounds broke the scoreless deadlock with a goal in the 61st minute as Mathias Sjkeseth scored with an assist from Jakub Olczyk.
The Flyers had a chance at the equalizer less than a minute after Sjkeseth's goal but
Abdul Ganiyu-Iddrisu's (Accra, Ghana/Eastern Florida State College) shot was blocked.
UIndy added an insurance goal in the 64th minute as Makel Rasheed's hit off the crossbar and crossed the line off a corner kick from Olczyk and Sjkeseth.
Justin Darlage (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) tried to cut the Hounds lead in half shortly after Rasheed's goal but he was turned away by Karousos.
Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) had two chances in the 72nd and 74th minutes but both of his shots were cleared off the line by the UIndy defense.
Lewis was outshot in the contest 20-10 and 8-5 in shots on goal. The Greyhounds had a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Flyers finish their Spring 2021 season with a record of 9-6-1 and were 8-5-1 in the GLVC.
