ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's top ranked women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to 16 matches with a sweep of Indianapolis on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 16-0 overall and in the GLVC while the Greyhounds drop to 7-10 overall and in the conference.
Lewis got off to a slow start to begin the match as it trailed 5-1 but quickly turned it around thanks to a 10-3 run to take an 11-8 lead on a bad set by Alex Equihua. The lead grew to 14-10 but UIndy fought back to within 20-18 after a kill from Hannah Huppenbauer.
That would be the closest it got as the Flyers closed the set scoring six of the final seven points to win 25-19.
The middle stanza went back-and-forth early before Lewis seized control midway through the frame and took an 18-12 lead after back-to-back kills from Julianna Van Loo. The Hounds cut the lead to 23-19 when Elizabeth Eads and Taylor Jacquay blocked
Natalie Stefanski (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet West). The Flyers closed the set out scoring two of the last three points to win 25-20 and take a commanding 2-0 lead.
The final set saw eight ties and seven lead changes. UIndy held an 18-14 lead after an attack error by Stefanski and forced Lewis to take a timeout. After the timeout, the Flyers ran off three straight to get within 18-17 on an attack error by Jacquay.
UIndy regrouped and went on a 4-2 run to extend its lead to 22-19 when Huppenbauer blocked Van Loo.
Lewis scored four straight to take a 23-22 lead on a kill from
Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg). The Greyhounds retook the lead scoring back-to-back points to get set point to try and extend the match.
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg) said not so fast as she recorded back-to-back kills to give the Flyers a 25-24 lead.
UIndy got back-to-back kills from Grace Hegwood and Emma Jones to regain the lead at 26-25. Schlechte tied the set at 26 with a kill and then Stefanon and Stefanski blocked Jacquay to give Lewis its second match point of the contest. Stefanon finished off the match recording a kill to give the Flyers a 28-26 victory.
Lewis hit .265 for the contest recording 53 kills against 14 errors in 147 chances. Schlechte led the way with 12 kills while
Amanda Greening (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) and
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) had nine kills apiece.
Haley Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) distributed 21 assists and
Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) had a match-high 25 digs.
The Flyers play their final home match of the season on Saturday hosting 24th ranked Southern Indiana at 3 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.
