EAST PEORIA, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team saw its season come to end with a 12-2 loss in five innings to seventh ranked and top seeded University of Indianapolis on Friday evening in an elimination game at the GLVC Tournament at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria, Ill.
The Greyhounds (39-6) scored three runs on four hits in the first inning. Brooke Montgomery led off the game with a home run to center hitting the first pitch she saw from
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee). The Hounds scored their second run of the frame on a single to left center by Lexy Rees scoring Kamrie Foster. Haylie Foster drove in the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left.
UIndy added three more in the second inning on a Rees' three-run homer to right center.
The Flyers got a run back in the bottom of the second on Serena's lead-off homer to left center. Lewis had a chance to cut into the deficit but was unable to take advantage of three errors by the Greyhounds in the frame.
The Hounds added some insurance scoring five runs on five hits highlighted by Gianni Iannantone's three-run homer to center.
UIndy scored its final run in the fifth on a fielding error by
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) allowing Lucy Garrett to score.
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) hit a solo home run to right center for Lewis' final run of the contest.
The Flyers were led offensively by Serena, Swartzentruber and Taylor with a hit apiece. Serena took the loss in the circle allowing three runs on four hits with two walks in an inning pitched to finish the season at 6-5.
Lewis finishes their season with a record of 26-18 overall and were 16-12 in the GLVC.
