Flyers Host Lindenwood On Sunday To Begin GLVC Slate

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's soccer team hosts Lindenwood on Sunday (Sept. 12) afternoon to kick-off its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule. The game is scheduled to kick-off at noon and will be at Lewis Stadium.

The Flyers look to begin a season 3-0 for the first time since 2013 when they started the season with four straight wins. Lewis was picked to finish 11th in this year's GLVC Preseason Coaches Poll.

Last Time Out – Lewis picked up a pair of victories to open the season last weekend. It picked up a 2-1 overtime win over Tiffin last Thursday on Melisa Hadzic's (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) goal 3:21 into overtime. The Flyers followed it up with a 3-2 win at Purdue Northwest last Saturday. All five goals in the contest came in the first 45 minutes. Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South), Cameron Sengstock (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) and Maddie Levins (Elmhurst, Ill./York) all scored for the Flyers.

100 – Last Saturday's win was the 100th in the career for head coach Chris Koenig. He is the winningest coach in women's soccer history at Lewis.

League Leaders – Havelka-Vanderplow ranks among the GLVC leaders in a couple of offensive categories through the first weekend of play. She is tied for first in the conference in assists with two, third in points with six, third in points per game with three and tied for third in goals with two. Sengstock and Hadzic are tied for fifth in points with three each and tied for seventh in goals with one apiece.

About Lindenwood – The Lions enter Sunday afternoon's contest seeking their first win of the season after losing back-to-back games to Grand Valley State and Ferris State by the score of 4-0 last weekend. Lindenwood was picked to finish fourth in the GLVC Preseason Coaches Poll. It is coming off a 9-3-3 mark during the Spring 2021 season and compiled a program-record nine shutouts.

The Lions return five players who earned All-GLVC honors last season, including Freshman of the Year Maggie Weller and All-GLVC First-Team goalkeeper Sam Blazek. Weller led the team in goals (5) and points (12) last season. Blazek notched 52 saves while the team conceded just six goals.

Series Stuff – Lindenwood has won both meetings in the series against Lewis which dates back to 2019.  The Lions picked up a 1-0 win over Lewis in the first meeting back in 2019 and beat the Flyers 3-1 this past spring.
