ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's soccer team wraps up its three-game road trip on Friday with a visit to Illinois Springfield at 7:30 p.m. The Flyers enter Friday's contest with a record of 4-2-2, 2-2-1 GLVC while the Prairie Stars are 5-3, 4-1 GLVC.
Lewis went 0-1-1 last weekend drawing with top ranked Indianapolis 1-1 last Friday in Indianapolis and then lost a hard fought match at Southern Indiana 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Flyers had the early lead in both contests with fifth-year senior forward
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) scoring a goal in each contest.
League Leaders – Lewis continues to lead the GLVC in several offensive categories including points (55), assists with 21 and are tied for second with Quincy with 17 goals scored.
Mwanga is tied for second in the league in points with 11 while senior midfielder
Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) is tied for sixth with 10 points. Baumann is tied for fifth in goals with four while Mwanga is tied for ninth with three. Mwanga is tied for the league lead in assists with five while junior forward
Jayson Iniguez (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport Township), senior defender
Nathaniel Campbell (Palm Bay, Fla./Heritage) and junior midfielder
Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) are all tied for fifth with three assists.
Sebastian Doppelhofer (Liebmannweg, Austria/Kapfenburg) is sixth in the GLVC in saves with 25, eighth in save percentage and ninth in goals against average.
Regional Rankings – The Flyers dropped three spots in this week's United Soccer Coaches Midwest Regional Poll from sixth to ninth. They're one of four GLVC team ranked in this week's poll with UIndy continuing to hold the top spot in both the regional and national rankings. Maryville dropped from third to six and Illinois Springfield fell from seventh to 10th.
About Illinois Springfield – The Prairie Stars had their four-game winning streak snapped on Sunday with a 1-0 loss at McKendree. UIS is led in scoring by Lars Brinkman with four goals for a total of eight points while Conal Gallagher and Browel Some are tied for second on the team with five points apiece.
Pijus Petkevicius has played every minute in goal for the Stars recording two shutouts and has a goals against average of 1.22 and has made 28 saves.
Series Stuff – Lewis leads the all-time series against UIS 9-4-1 but the Prairie Stars have won two of the last three meetings including a 2-1 win in overtime last March at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers are 3-2 all-time in Springfield.
Up Next – Lewis is back at home next Friday (Oct. 8) hosting Truman State at 3 p.m. at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers will also take on Quincy on Sunday (Oct. 10) at 2:30 p.m.
