ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Things weren't looking for good Lewis' men's soccer team with less than five minutes left in regulation on Sunday as they trailed Parkside 3-1 before striking twice in the final four minutes to tie the game and pick up a 3-3 draw with the Rangers at Lewis Stadium. Both teams are now 1-0-1 on the season.
The Flyers got on the board first with a goal in the ninth minute. Lewis won a throw in and
Nathaniel Campbell (Palm Bay, Fla./Heritage) threw it in to
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) who dribbled towards the center of the pitch and found
Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) who ripped a shot from 25 yards into the lower right corner for his first goal of the season.
Parkside evened the score 2:41 later as Dejan Rokvic scored off a free kick from Max Ludwig and Rade Novakovich. The Rangers jumped in front in the 26th minute as Ludwig scored his second of the season with an assist from Novakovich.
Parkside got its third goal in the 38th minute as Osvaldo Sanchez Arellano headed home a misplay from
Will Maurice (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) for his first goal of the season.
The Rangers finished with a 6-3 edge in shots and 5-2 in shots on goal in the first 45 minutes. Both teams had a pair of corner kicks.
Parkside had a chance to put the game away with five minutes left in regulation, but
Sebastian Doppelhofer (Liebmannweg, Austria/Kapfenburg) stopped a shot from Nikola Kesich to keep the deficit at two goals.
Lewis cut the Ranger lead to 3-2 with 3:21 to play as Baumann headed home a cross from
Seth Dilworth (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) for his second goal of the contest and of the season.
The Flyers got the equalizer with 0:38 remaining as Mwanga headed a ball ahead to Dilworth who shot it from the right side of the penalty box over the keeper's hands and into the left side netting of the goal for his first of the season.
Doppelhoffer stopped the only shot he faced in the first overtime session as he denied Matteo Quintero with 3:02 remaining in the stanza.
Parkside had another chance to win the game in the second overtime period as Ludwig took a shot that was stopped by Doppelhofer.
Lewis had its lone chance to win the game with 4:05 to play but
Matt Budreck's (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) shot was blocked on the way through.
The Rangers finished the contest with a 15-8 advantage in shots, 9-4 in shots on goal and 4-3 in corner kicks. There were six yellow cards issued in the match with three going to each team and the Parkside bench picked up a red card.
The Flyers continue their five-match home stand on Thursday hosting Northern Michigan at 2:30 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
