ST. LOUIS – Lewis University's men's lacrosse team rallied from a five-goal deficit to defeat Maryville 15-13 on Saturday at the Maryville Lacrosse Field in St. Louis. The Flyers improve to 3-1 while the Saints fall to 2-1.

Lewis scored the first goal of the game less than a minute into the contest as Evan Clement (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) scored an unassisted goal. Maryville scored the next four goals to take the lead. Jacob Allen scored two of those goals for the Saints. Maryville still led 5-2 late in the opening frame when Drew Andre (Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada/Pitt Meadows Secondary School) and Drew Kask (Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) scored back-to-back goals in the span of 1:06 to cut the Saint lead to 5-4 by the end of the quarter.

The Flyers tied the game early in the second quarter as Clement scored his second of the contest at the 12:54 mark. Maryville retook the lead with three straight goals to make it 8-5. Lewis cut the deficit to 8-6 on a goal from Nolan Dalep (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Claremont Secondary School) but the Saints got a goal from Reid Usrey with less than three minutes remaining in the half to take a 9-6 lead into the intermission.

The Saints scored twice in the first five-plus minutes of the third quarter to take an 11-6 lead on two goals from Aidan Koenig. Baden Boyenko (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph) started the Flyer comeback with a goal at the 7:55 mark with an assist from Clement. Soren Thrawl (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) then scored to make it 11-8 and Boyenko added his second of the quarter to cut Maryville's lead to 11-9 by the end of the quarter.

Lewis scored the first five goals of the final stanza. Clement tied the game with his third of the contest 1:01 into the frame and then Boyenko gave the Flyers a lead for good scoring at the 10:13 mark. Jack Stone (Eagan, Minn./Eagan), Dalep and Luke Schroeder (Plymouth, Minn./Totino Grace) each scored to extend the lead to 14-11.

Koenig scored again to cut the deficit to 14-12 with 3:07 left before Stone added his second of the contest with 1:56 to play to seal the victory. Usrey scored a goal with 0:04 left for the final margin.

Lewis was outshot in the contest 45-26 but only 29-26 in shots on goal. It was 15-of-19 in clear attempts, went 14-for-30 at the faceoff dot and was 4-of-7 in extra man opportunities. Clement and Boyenko led the Flyers with three goals apiece while Dalep, Kask and Stone finished with two goals each. Riah Rathe (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) made 16 saves in goal.

Koenig and Usrey combined to score nine of Maryville's 13 goals in the contest.

Lewis is back in action next Saturday as it travels to Painesville, Ohio to take on Lake Erie at 11 a.m. (CST).
