Lewis Softball Blanks Hillsdale To Extend Win Streak To Five

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team defeated Hillsdale 5-0 on Sunday morning in the final game of the Lewis Dome Invitational at The Dome at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont, Ill. The Flyers improve to 5-4 while the Chargers drop to 2-8.

Lewis jumped on top with a run in the second inning. Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) and Maggie Joutras (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic High School) walked back-to-back with one out in the inning and each advanced on a wild pitch. Carrie Anderson (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community) drove in Serena hitting a sacrifice fly deep to center field.

The Flyers added to their lead scoring four runs on four hits in the fifth inning. Anderson started the inning with a double down the left field line for Lewis' first hit of the contest. Jalyn Powell (Tolono, Ill./Unity) followed with a single up the middle to bring in Anderson. Gabi Nilles (North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) tripled to the left center gap to score Powell to make it 3-0. Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) capped the scoring with a two-out, two-run single up the middle to drive in Nilles and Ella Jacobson (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East).

Delaney Garden (Carpentersville, Ill./H.D. Jacobs) pitched out of a jam in the sixth to keep the game scoreless and then set down the Chargers in order in the seventh to pick up her second straight complete game shutout victory. She allowed two hits with four strikeouts and three walks to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Kavalauskas, Anderson, Powell and Nilles had a hit apiece. Kavalauskas drove in a pair of runs while Anderson, Powell and Nilles had an RBI each.

The Flyers are back in action on Saturday (March 5) as they travel to Florida for the Spring Games. They'll take on Southwest Minnesota State at 8 a.m. (CST) and then will play California (Pa.) at 11:30 a.m. (CST) at the Polk State Diamond Plex in Winter Haven, Fla.
