Flyers Rally Past Hawks 83-73 Saturday

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University men's basketball team rallied past Quincy 83-73 Saturday (Feb. 5) in a Great Lakes Valley contest at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers move to 9-7 overall, 7-2 in the GLVC, while the Hawks drop to 12-13 overall, 5-10 in the GLVC.

The Flyers jumped out to a 6-5 lead before the Hawks scored seven straight points for a 12-6 advantage. The lead grew to 21-11 at the midway point of the first half.

The teams traded baskets until a Quincy three-pointer gave it a 34-21 lead with 5:10 remaining in the half. Lewis came back with six straight points on a three-point play by Dre Bell (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge) and a three-pointer by Bruno Williams (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran).

Quincy rebounded to grab a 43-32 lead at the half.

That lead grew to 50-38 with 16:28 left when the Flyers made their run, scoring 35 of the next 45 points over nearly 15 minutes.

The first run was 12-2 over 5:15 to make it a 52-50 game as Atakan Sahinkaya (Istanbul, Turkey/Perkiomen School) scored four points in the spurt.

Lewis grabbed the lead for the first time since early in the game at the 6:15 mark on a jumper by Willlams. That was followed by layups by Bell and Connor Niego (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) and the Flyers finished off a 10-0 run to take a 62-57 lead.

After a Quincy three-pointer, the Flyers responded with 11 straight points behind five from Sahinkaya to pull ahead 73-60 with 1:38 left.

Quincy pulled to within five points at 73-68 with 1:08 left, but six Beau Frericks (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) free throws down the stretch put the game away.

Sahinkaya finished the game with 20 points and eight rebounds to lead Lewis, while Frericks had 18 points. Williams tallied 15 points, while Niego added 13 for the Flyers.

The Flyers shot 56.9 percent (29-of-51) from the floor, while Quincy was 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the field. Lewis won the rebounding battle 34-28.

The Flyers conclude their homestand Monday (Feb. 7) against Illinois-Springfield at 7:30 p.m.
