SANFORD, Fla. – Lewis University's baseball team fell to Northern State 3-1 in a rain shortened contest on Friday afternoon at Sanford Stadium in Sanford, Fla. The Flyers drop to 2-8 on the season while the Wolves improve to 4-5.
The fourth inning provided all the scoring in the game as Lewis scored one run in the top of the inning.
Gavin Kriegel (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) led off the inning with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He and scored on
Kevin Barry's (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) ground out to second base.
The Flyers had a chance to add on as
Angelo Cantelo (Blue Island, Ill./Marian Catholic) doubled to right center and
Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) walked with one out. A ground out advanced both runners but Northern State got a strikeout to end the inning to keep the game at a one-run margin.
The Wolves scored three runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Reece Ragatz and Ramon Vega Jr. started the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. Gus Radel doubled to center field scoring Ragatz with the tying run and put the go-ahead runs in scoring position. After a walk to load the bases, Austin Portner singled through the left side scoring Radel and Vega Jr. to take a 3-1 lead.
Jonathon Hanscom (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) came into pitch and retired the final two batters of the inning and then pitched a perfect fifth inning.
Barry led off the sixth inning with a single and then the teams were pulled off the field due to lightning and eventually the game was called due to rain.
Michael Sclafani (Oak Brook, Ill./Montini Catholic) (0-3) suffered the loss giving up five hits, three runs, two walks, while striking out five in 3.1 innings of work. Wolves pitcher Brian Baker (1-1) picked up his first win of the season pitching 5-plus innings giving up four hits, one run, and striking out seven.
Lewis had four hits in the contest with Barry, Cantelo,
David Ascencio (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) and
Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) accounting for the offense.
The Flyers wrap up their Spring Break trip on Saturday, March 12 as they take on Ashland at 8:45 a.m. CST at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
