ROSEMONT, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team snapped its six-game losing streak defeating McKendree 8-0 in six innings in the second game of a doubleheader on Monday afternoon at The Dome at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont, Ill. The Bearcats (7-11, 1-3 GLVC) won the first game of the doubleheader 13-3 in five innings.
Game 2 – Lewis 8 McKendree 0 6 innings
The Flyers (10-10, 1-3 GLVC) sent 10 batters to the dish in the bottom of the fourth scoring six runs on five hits to break the scoreless deadlock.
Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) drove in the first run with a single through the left side of the infield.
Meghan Bontrager (Milford, Ind./Northridge) and
Jalyn Powell (Tolono, Ill./Unity) walked back-to-back with the bases loaded to make it 3-0.
Payton Wuske (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) drove in the final three runs of the inning hitting a triple to right.
Lewis added an unearned run in the fifth as Kavalauskas scored on a throwing error by the third baseman to make it 7-0. The Flyers ended the game in the sixth as Wuske scored on a ground ball to short sliding in just ahead of the tag.
Lewis had seven hits in the contest and was led by Kavalauskas and Wuske with two hits apiece.
Gabi Nilles (North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora),
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) and
Maggie Joutras (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic High School) had one hit each. Delany Garden went the distance allowing no runs on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk to improve to 5-3.
Game 1 – McKendree 13 Lewis 0 5 innings
McKendree sent 11 batters to the plate scoring seven runs on three hits and five walks in the top of the first. Heaven Lawrence drove in three of the seven runs in the inning as she led off the game with a home run to left and capped the inning driving in two with a ground-rule double to center.
The Bearcats added to their lead in the third inning as Lawrence hit a smash off the fence in left center that ended up being an inside the park home run.
McKendree added to its lead scoring five times in the fourth highlighted by Sydney Bires grand slam to left.
The Flyers scored three times on five hits in the fifth. Serena led off the inning with a home run to left. Garden drove in the second run with a groundout to second and Nilles drove in the final run with a single up the middle.
The Flyers were held to six hits in the contest with Nilles and Joutras recording two hits apiece while Serena and
Nichole Kiddy (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) had one each.
Kaelynn Leverson got the start in the circle and allowed five runs on two hits and three walks in 0.1 innings pitched to fall to 0-4 on the season.
Lewis returns to the diamond on Saturday as it travels to Indianapolis to take on the fourth ranked Greyhounds beginning at 11 a.m. (CDT).
