INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis University's softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader against fourth ranked Indianapolis on Monday afternoon at Baumgartner Field in Indianapolis. The Flyers drop to 10-14, 1-7 GLVC while the Greyhounds improve to 22-2, 4-0 GLVC.
Game 1 – UIndy 6, Lewis 1
Lewis jumped out to an early lead in the first game of the day with a run in the first inning.
Gabi Nilles (North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) singled with one out and scored on
Evie Calderon's (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) double to center. The Flyers had a chance to add to their lead but a strikeout and a pop out ended the frame.
UIndy sent eight batters to the plate in its half of the first scoring two runs on five hits and an error. Dominique Proctor led off with a walk, stole second and scored on an error by
Meghan Bontrager (Milford, Ind./Northridge) on Megan Nichols single to tie the game. The Greyhounds took the lead on Lexy Rees' single to right to score Nichols.
The Hounds tacked on a run in the third and fourth inning and two more in the fifth for the final margin.
Lewis had its chances to score but left the bases loaded in the third, two on in the fourth and one in the sixth and seventh innings.
The Flyers were held to six hits in the contest with Nilles recording three of those while Calderon,
Delaney Garden (Carpentersville, Ill./H.D. Jacobs) and
Payton Wuske (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) had a hit apiece. Garden got the start in the circle and allowed six runs, five earned, on 15 hits in the complete game effort to fall to 5-5 on the season. She had four strikeouts and two walks in the contest.
Game 2 – UIndy 4, Lewis 0
Lewis got back-to-back hits from Garden and Calderon in the top of the first but didn't score as Garden was thrown out at the plate on Calderon's single and Calderon was thrown out trying to advance to second.
UIndy jumped on top with a run in its half of the first on Gianni Iannantone's single to left to drive in Proctor.
The Hounds added to their lead with two in the third on an RBI double from Rees and an RBI single from Iannantone. UIndy scored its final run of the contest in the fifth on Sydnee Perry's two out single down the left field line to drive in Piper Beiden.
After allowing the back-to-back hits in the first inning Haylie Foster retired the final 18 batters she faced over the final six innings.
Garden and Calderon had the only hits in game two.
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) took the loss allowing four runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and three walks to drop to 1-2 on the season.
The Flyers continue their 10-game road trip this Wednesday afternoon as they travel to Hammond, Ind., to take on Purdue Northwest in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
