ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team swept its doubleheader at Ferris State on Tuesday afternoon to extend its winning streak to three games. The Flyers (13-15) took the opener 6-2 and won the nightcap 3-0.
Game 1 – Lewis 6, Ferris State 2
Ferris State (9-14) jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first on a solo home run off the bat of center fielder Paige Kortz.
Lewis answered right back with two of its own in the second.
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) and
Maggie Joutras (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic High School) hit back-to-back doubles to open the inning to tie the contest at 1-1. Later in the inning,
Payton Wuske (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) reached on an error by the first baseman that allowed Joutras to score the go-ahead run.
The Flyers added to their lead with four runs in the fourth inning.
Gabi Nilles (North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) drove in the first two runs of the inning with a double to center to drive in
Meghan Bontrager (Milford, Ind./Northridge) and
Ella Jacobson (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East). Two batters later
Evie Calderon (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) made it 6-1 hitting a double to right center to drive in Nilles and
Delaney Garden (Carpentersville, Ill./H.D. Jacobs).
The Bulldogs got a run back in its half of the fourth as Ali Magiera walked with the bases loaded to drive in Evelyn Blood.
Lewis outhit Ferris 9-4 in the contest and was led by
Jalyn Powell (Tolono, Ill./Unity) with two hits. Nilles and Calderon drove in two runs apiece. Serena pitched a complete game allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and six walks to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Game 2 – Lewis 3, Ferris State 0
In the second game of the afternoon, the Flyers jumped out on top scoring twice in the top of the first. Nilles was hit by a pitch to start the game and came into score on Garden's triple to right. Garden scored on Calderon's sacrifice fly to left.
Lewis added to its lead in the third as Serena doubled to center to drive in Garden.
The Flyers had nine hits in the nightcap and were led by Garden with three while Serena had two. Wuske got the start in the circle and went the first five innings allowing no runs on nine hits with five strikeouts to only two walks to improve to 6-3. Garden went the final two innings allowing no runs and struck out three to pick up her first save of the season.
Lewis is back at home this weekend as it hosts Truman State in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at 12 p.m. at the Lewis Softball Field.
