Late Run Comes Up Short As Lewis Men’s Hoops Falls In GLVC Semis

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's basketball team whittled a 13-point second half deficit to just three with 2:30 remaining but its run came up short as it lost to Indianapolis 72-63 in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Saturday evening at First Community Arena in Edwardsville, Ill. The Flyers fall to 16-11 while the Greyhounds move to 19-10.

Lewis fell behind early and trailed by as many as eight with 11:01 remaining in the opening stanza. The Flyers got going with a 15-0 run that saw them turn that eight-point deficit into a seven-point lead at 23-16 after a jumper by Beau Frericks (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove).

The Hounds snapped that drought as Cory Miller Jr. converted an old fashioned three-point play to cut the deficit to four and sparked a 7-0 run that saw UIndy tie the game at 23 with less than a minute to go in the half.

Lewis regained the lead with 0:32 to go as Marquise Jackson (Macon, Ga./Windsor Academy) hit a driving layup but Miller Jr. scored in the final seconds of the half to tie the game at 25 at the break.

UIndy scored the first points of the second half but Connor Niego (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) answered on the other end with a three to give the Flyers their final lead of the night.

The Greyhounds scored 11 straight points to build a 10-point lead before Lewis fought back to within four at 39-35 after two free throws by Niego.

UIndy answered again running off 13 of the next 17 points to build a 52-39 with 7:53 remaining on a jumper by Jesse Bingham.

The two sides traded baskets over the next four minutes as the Hounds still led by 11 with four minutes to go.

The Flyers got hot over the next 90 seconds as Frericks and Niego hit back-to-back three's and Bruno Williams (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) added a turnaround jumper in the paint to cut the UIndy led to three with 2:30 to play.

The game swung in the Hounds favor 0:20 later as Jackson was called for his fifth foul and was then assessed a technical foul as he protested the call. Bingham hit all four free throws to extend the lead to seven and then Josiah Tynes scored on a layup after a steal by Jakobie Robinson to make it nine-point game.

Miller Jr. added the final four points to give the Hounds their biggest lead of the night at 72-58.

Austin Boucher (Fort Wayne, Ind./Fort Wayne North Side) scored the final five points of the game for Lewis off the bench for the final margin.

The Flyers were held to 42 percent (24-for-61) shooting in the contest including 6-of-17 from three but shot only 60 percent at the foul line. Dre Bell (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge) led three players in double figures with 19 points while Niego added 14 and Jackson finished with 10.

UIndy hit 15-of-25 shots in the second half to finish the game shooting 52 percent from the floor, they were only 4-of-13 from three but did shoot 73 percent at the foul line. Miller Jr. scored a game-high 29 points and was joined by Bingham with 23 points.

Lewis will find out on Sunday evening if it will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament at 9:30 p.m. (CST).
