ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's baseball snapped its seven-game losing streak as it rallied for a 12-5 victory over Parkside on Tuesday afternoon at Brennan Field. The Flyers improve to 11-20-1 while the Rangers drop to 2-23.
Parkside jumped on top four batters into the game on Dominic Esposito's three-run homer to right that scored Caleb Badgley and Ryan Brouch.
Lewis got a run back in the second on
Gavin Kriegel's (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) RBI single through the left side of the infield that scored
Joe Preusser (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice).
The Rangers scored an unearned run in the fifth to regain its three-run lead. Badgley drove in Andrew Leair with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Flyers cut the lead to 4-2 with a run in the sixth.
Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) doubled to right center to score
Jason Krol (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence).
Ryne Meriel (Lindenhurst, Ill./Carmel Catholic) tried to score from first on the play but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Parkside got another run in the seventh. With two outs, Noah Tyrrell singled to left to drive in Jared Heinzen.
Lewis tied the score in the home half of the seventh on
Kevin Barry's (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) three-run homer to right center.
The Flyers sent 11 batters to the plate in the eighth inning scoring seven runs on six hits.
Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) broke the tie hitting a two-run double to right center to drive in
Julian Everett (Frankfort, Ill/Lincoln Way East) and
Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly).
Davey Fitzpatrick (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) drove in Fox with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 8-5.
Krol followed with a single to right to score Barry, Meriel drove in two more with a single up the middle and Everett capped the scoring with a double to right center to drive in Meriel.
Matt Helwig (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) recorded the final six outs of the contest to pick up his second win of the season and even his record at 2-2.
Lewis outhit the Rangers 14-8 in the contest and were led by Barry three hits and three RBI while Fox, Preusser and Meriel had two hits apiece.
The Flyers resume GLVC play this weekend hosting Southern Indiana in four-game series. The first game of the series will be on Friday at 2 p.m.
