ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's 49th ranked men's tennis team clinched a spot in the 2022 GLVC Tournament with a 6-1 win over Southern Indiana on Friday afternoon at the Vaughn Athletic Center in Aurora, Ill. The Flyers improve to 14-7, 4-2 GLVC while the Screaming Eagles drop to 9-9, 0-5 GLVC.
Lewis won all three doubles matches to win the opening point of the dual. The number one team of
Juan Martin Ramirez Mejia (Medellin, Colombia/) and
David Ambrozic (Portoroz, Slovenia/) won their match over Cameron Preston and Spencer Blandford 6-3. The duo of
Oliwer Wierzbicki (Szczecin, Poland) and
Andrej Zoranovic (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Yahor Bahdanovich and Parker Collignon while the number two team of
Oskar Lusti (Tallinn, Estonia/) and
Pedja Trifunovic (Aleksandrovac, Serbia/) knocked off Lucas Sakamaki and Marvin Kromer 6-4.
The Flyers won five of the six singles matches. Ramirez Mejia swept Bahdanovich 6-0, 6-3 in the first singles competition. Ambrozic followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Blandford at number three singles. Lusti clinched the win as he defeated Sakamaki 6-3, 6-3 in the second singles match. Trifunovic knocked off Kromer 8-2 and Wierzbicki defeated Collignon 9-8. USI's only victory in the dual came at number six singles with Quinten Gillespie defeating Zoranovic 8-2.
Lewis' next match will take place in the GLVC Tournament next Friday at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis. Opponents and times will be announced early next week.
