ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team wrapped up the home portion of its 2022 schedule sweeping Southwest Baptist in a doubleheader on Monday at the Lewis Softball Field. The Flyers won the opener 3-1 and took the second game 5-0.
Game 1 – Lewis 3, Southwest Baptist 1
SBU (7-35, 1-23 GLVC) scored a run on three hits in the second inning. Izabelle Anderson drove in Meadow Vasser with a one out single to left with the bases loaded.
Delaney Garden (Carpentersville, Ill./H.D. Jacobs) prevented further damage by getting a fly out to left and a ground out to short to end the inning.
Lewis (23-23, 9-15 GLVC) rallied in the fifth scoring two runs on three hits.
Jalyn Powell (Tolono, Ill./Unity) drove in
Gabi Nilles (North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) with the tying run with a single through the left side of the infield and then
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) drove in Garden with the go-ahead run with a squeeze bunt to first.
The Flyers added an insurance run in the sixth.
Carrie Anderson (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community) led off the inning with a double down the left field line, advanced to third on a groundout to the pitcher and scored on
Maggie Joutras' (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic High School) bloop single to left over the drawn in infield.
Lewis outhit the Bearcats 7-6 in the contest and was led by Powell with two hits while Nilles, Garden, Anderson, Joutras and
Evie Calderon (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) had one hit apiece. Garden picked up the complete game victory allowing one run on six hits with eight strikeouts against two walks to improve to 10-9 on the season.
Game 2 – Lewis 5, Southwest Baptist 0
The Flyers sent seven batters to the plate in the fourth inning scoring three runs on four hits. Nilles led off the inning with a double to center and then scored on Garden's single up the middle. With two out in the inning, Calderon hit a two-run home run over the scoreboard in left for her fourth round tripper of the season.
SBU brought the tying run to the plate in both the fifth and sixth innings but were unable to push across any runs.
Lewis tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. Anderson drove in the first run of the inning with a double to left and then later in the inning Anderson scored on a double down the left field line off the bat of Joutras.
The Flyers outhit the Bearcats 9-4 in the second game and were led by Garden and Anderson with two each.
Payton Wuske (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) picked up the victory tossing a complete game shutout allowing four hits with seven strikeouts and four walks to improve to 4-7 on the season.
Lewis returns to the diamond this Saturday (April 30) as it travels to St. Louis to take on Maryville in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at the Maryville Softball Field.
