ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's lacrosse team fell in the semifinal round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament to fifth ranked Indianapolis 16-11 on Friday afternoon at Key Stadium in Indianapolis.
The Flyers, seeded fourth, got off to a fast start scoring three of the first four goals in the contest to take the early lead.
Nolan Dalep (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Claremont Secondary School) scored two of those while
Baden Boyenko (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph) added the third. The Greyhounds (14-1), seeded first, got back-to-back goals from James Whiteford late in the first quarter to tie the game at three.
Parker Johnson gave UIndy a 4-3 lead as he scored 0:58 into second frame but Lewis came right back as
Evan Clement (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) scored 2:15 later to even things at 4-4. The Hounds dominated the remainder of the stanza scoring four straight to take an 8-4 lead into the break.
UIndy pushed its lead to as many as six late in the third quarter on a goal from Patrick O'Hara but Dalep countered scoring his fourth goal of the contest in the closing seconds of the period to cut the Hound lead to 12-7 heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
Lewis gave up the first goal in the final quarter before proceeding to score the next four to cut the UIndy lead to 13-11 after Boyenko's second and third goals of the contest. The Greyhounds scored three times in the final 6:11 to add some insurance.
The Flyers had 22 shots in the contest with 15 of those on goal. Dalep led the way while Boyenko and
Evan Clement (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) scored three goals each and
Jack Stone (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) added one.
Xan Brouillet (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) forced two turnovers in the game while
Josh Calvin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame College Prepatory HS) made nine saves and
Riah Rathe (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) scooped up six ground balls.
Lewis finishes its season with a record of 9-6, 3-3 in GLVC play and advanced to the GLVC Tournament for the first time in program history. The nine wins are a program record for a single season.
The Flyers had eight players named to the All-GLVC Team on Friday. Clement, Boyenko and Stone were named to the second team while Brouillet, Dalep,
Drew Andre (Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada/Pitt Meadows Secondary School),
Sam Kern (Delano, Minn./Delano) and
Zack Merwin (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) received honorable mention accolades.
