ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team swept Quincy in a doubleheader to extend its winning streak to seven on Sunday afternoon at the Lewis Softball Field. The Flyers (17-15, 6-8 GLVC) won the opener 5-4 in 10 innings and took the second game 12-8.
Game 1 – Lewis 5, Quincy 4 10 innings
The Hawks (9-24, 3-13 GLVC) scored three runs on four hits and an error in the third inning to take the early lead. Lewis came back scoring three runs on four hits in the bottom half of the inning to knot the score at three.
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) drove in the first run of the inning with a base hit up the middle to drive in
Gabi Nilles (North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora).
Delaney Garden (Carpentersville, Ill./H.D. Jacobs) scored on a groundout from
Maggie Joutras (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic High School) to make it 3-2 and then
Jalyn Powell (Tolono, Ill./Unity) drove in Serena with a single off the third base bag to tie it.
Quincy came right back with a run in the fourth as Taylor Downen reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Mykah Hurley with the go-ahead run.
Bailee Highbarger held the Flyers to just one hit over the next three innings as the Hawks still led 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
With one out,
Payton Wuske (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) reached on an error as Audrey Hermann's throw pulled Madeline Ruzicka off the bag at first to open the door. Wuske then stole second and scored on Garden's bloop single to left to tie the game at four.
Lewis had a chance to win it in the seventh but
Evie Calderon (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) fouled out to first to end the inning.
The Flyers scored the winning run in the 10th as Nilles walked and Garden singled to start the inning. Both runners advanced on wild pitch to put the winning run in scoring position. Serena delivered her second game-winning hit of the weekend as she lined a single to center to score Nilles.
Lewis had nine hits in the contest and was led by Garden with three while Serena and Powell added two apiece. Wuske, pitching in relief of Serena, went the final seven innings allowing one run on four hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk to improve to 7-3 on the season.
Game 2 – Lewis 12, Quincy 8
The Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the nightcap on Bailey Mitchell's three-run home run to left center with one out in the first.
The Flyers jumped on Quincy's starter in their half of the first sending 10 batters to the plate scoring six runs on four hits and three walks. Serena drove in Nilles with the first run to make it 3-1. Joutras followed with a double to left center to drive in three to give Lewis a 4-3 lead. Later in the inning,
Carrie Anderson (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community) hit a two-run home run down the left field line to extend the lead to 6-3.
The Flyers extended their lead in the second scoring three times. Serena doubled to left to plate Garden and then Joutras singled to center to score Calderon. Joutras got caught in a rundown between first and second which allowed Serena to score to make it 9-3.
The Hawks came right back with two in the third as Ruzicka stole home and then Ashley Pooere singled to center to bring in Casey Brennan.
Lewis pushed its lead to 10-5 in the third as Garden doubled to left center to drive in Wuske from first led off the inning with a single.
Quincy made it two-run game in the fourth as Brennan hit a three-run homer center to cut it to 10-8.
The Flyers got two of those runs back in their half of the fourth on a two-run single from Wuske that scored Powell and
Meghan Bontrager (Milford, Ind./Northridge).
Garden held the Hawks to just two hits over the final three innings to nail down her eighth victory of the season.
Lewis had 14 hits in the nightcap led by Joutras with three while Garden and Serena added two apiece. Joutras drove in four runs in the contest while Serena, Anderson and Wuske had two RBI each.
Garden went the distance in the circle allowing eight runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts and five walks.
The Flyers take a break from GLVC action as they travel to Hammond, Ind., on Thursday to take on Purdue Northwest at 1 p.m.
