KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – A day after having its five-game winning streak snapped Lewis University's baseball team bounced back sweeping a doubleheader against Truman State at Bulldog Park on Saturday afternoon in Kirksville, Mo. The Flyers (17-21-1, 12-11 GLVC) won the opening game 8-3 and the nightcap 11-5.
Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) went 6-for-8 at the plate in the doubleheader with two doubles, a home run and eight runs batted in.
Game 1 – Lewis 8, Truman 3
The Bulldogs (17-28, 7-12 GLVC) jumped out to the early lead scoring a run on two hits in the bottom of the first. Holden Missey singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Kevin Donohue with the first run of the game.
Lewis tied the game in the third with a run on three hits. Barry drove in the tying run with a single through the right side of the infield to bring home
Cherokee Lebeau (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka).
Truman regained the lead in its half of the third scoring two runs on two hits. Brennan Perkins broke the tie with a double to left to bring home Tal Dean and then Missey followed with a double to center that scored Perkins.
The Flyers took their first lead of the contest in the fourth scoring four runs on three hits. They loaded the bases with one out in the inning.
Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) scored the first run on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) gave Lewis the lead as he cleared the bases with a single to left that scored Lebeau,
Jason Krol (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) and
Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin).
The Flyers tacked on insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Julian Everett (Frankfort, Ill/Lincoln Way East) drove in
David Ascencio (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) with a sacrifice fly in the fifth and then in the sixth Barry hit a two-run homer to right scoring
Joe Preusser (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice).
Lewis finished with 11 hits in the contest and was led by Alt with four while Barry and Preusser had two apiece. Barry and Fox each drove in three runs.
Anthony Sorrentino (Burr Ridge, Ill./Lyons Township) picked up his second straight win allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts against two walks in four innings of work.
Jake Lotz (Palos Hills, Ill./St. Laurence) pitched the final three innings allowing no hits with three strikeouts and three walks to pick up his first save of the season.
Game 2 – Lewis 11, Truman 5
The Bulldogs took the early lead scoring two runs on three hits in their half of the first. Will Fromm drove in Perkins and Luke Turner with a double to right with two out in the frame.
The Flyers got a run back in its half of the second. With two away,
Angelo Cantelo (Blue Island, Ill./Marian Catholic) walked and scored on Keaty's triple to right.
Lewis scored twice in the third on three hits to take the lead. Barry singled to center to drive in Preusser to tie the game and later in the inning Barry scored on a squeeze bunt off the bat of Lebeau.
Truman tied the game in its half of the third as Turner scored an unearned run on fielder's choice.
Lewis retook the lead in the fifth. With one out, Lebeau doubled, went to third on a groundout back to the pitcher and scored on a wild pitch.
The Bulldogs got a two-out hit from Perkins in their half of the fifth that scored Donohue with the tying run.
The Flyers scored again in the sixth with a run on two hits. Preusser started a two-out rally with an infield single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Barry's double to left center.
Lewis broke it open in the seventh scoring six runs on three hits and two errors. Cantelo drove in the first two runs of the inning with a double to left. Later in the inning Barry cleared the bases with a double to left to make it 10-4. Barry scored when Ascencio reached on an error by the shortstop for the final run of the inning.
Truman scored a run in the bottom half of the inning on a bases loaded balk but would leave the bases loaded as
Matt Helwig (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) struck out two hitters to complete the sweep.
The Flyers had 14 hits in the nightcap and were led by Barry's four while Lebeau added three and Preusser and Keaty chipped in with two each. Barry and Cantelo combined to drive in seven runs in the contest.
Jonathon Hanscom (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) got the start on the hill and allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk in 6.1 innings pitched to even his record at 3-3.
The two teams conclude their four-game weekend series with a single nine-inning game on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.
