ST. LOUIS – Lewis University's 71st ranked women's tennis team was eliminated from the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament in the semifinals by 39th ranked Southwest Baptist 4-2 on Saturday evening at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis. The Flyers drop to 15-7 while the Bearcats improve to 15-7.
SBU won the first two doubles competitions to win the opening point of the match. Paula Ballesteros and Diana Cabrera defeated Lewis'
Nefeli Zafeiri (Greece) and
Casey Smith (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) 6-2 at number one doubles while Ghada Dirninger and Elsa Pascual handed
Anastasiya Salenko (Kyiv, Ukraine) and
Joie Reisch (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township) a 6-4 defeat in the second doubles match.
The Bearcats extended their lead to 2-0 as Cabrera defeated Salenko 6-1, 6-3 in the first singles match but the Flyers got a win from
Sage Hills (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) as she defeated Giselle Garcia 6-2, 6-1 at number six singles. SBU won the number five singles match as Lola Cincunegui beat Reisch 6-0, 6-4 but Lewis got a win at number three singles from Smith as she rallied to defeat Pascual 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
The dual came down to the final two matches. The Bearcats clinched the match with a win at number two singles where Ballesteros defeated Zafeiri 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
The Flyers will find out on Monday evening if they'll receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament.
