ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's baseball team began its four-game weekend series against Quincy with an 8-7 win on Friday afternoon at Brennan Field. The Flyers improve to 10-13-1, 6-3 GLVC while the Hawks drop to 14-13, 5-4 GLVC.
Lewis jumped on Quincy in the bottom of the first scoring three runs on three hits and two errors. After
Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) led off with a single and
Joe Preusser (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice) reached on a throwing error by the first baseman,
Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) reached via a fielding error by the short stop allowing Fox to score from third.
Gavin Kriegel (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) singled through the left side to score Preusser and
Jason Krol (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) singled up the middle to score Alt to make it 3-0.
The Hawks answered back with one of their own on two hits in the second. Nolan Wosman led off with a single and scored on Joe Roscetti's single to center field to make the score 3-1. Quincy scored another in the fourth once again after a double by Wosman and an RBI single to center from Roscetti.
The Flyers scored four runs on three hits in the fourth.
Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) led off with a double to the left center gap followed by a walk from Fox and a hit by pitch by
David Ascencio (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) to load the bases. Alt hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Keaty followed by a single up the middle from Kriegel to score Fox.
Dalton Crowder (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) stepped up to the plate with two outs and smashed a double down the right field line scoring Kriegel and Ascencio to increase the lead to 7-2.
The Hawks got two runs back in the sixth on two hits and an error. Lance Logsdon reached via a dropped fly ball by the second baseman and Wosman homered to right center to make the score 7-4.
Quincy scored two more in the eighth after Wosman hit his second homerun of the day followed by a hit by pitch from Boynton who later scored on a throwing error by the pitcher.
Lewis scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on Krol's single up the middle to score Alt who led off the inning with a single to left field.
The Hawks scored a run in the ninth on a wild pitch with the bases loaded and had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position but
Matt Helwig (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) got the final out on a ground out to first to pick up his second save of the season.
The Flyers outhit Quincy 14 to 9 and were led by Kriegel and Krol with three apiece while Fox and Alt had two each, and Preusser, Crowder, and Keaty followed with one apiece. Alt, Kriegel, Crowder, and Krol all drove in two runs each.
Michael Sclafani (Oak Brook, Ill./Montini Catholic) (2-4) earned the win for the Flyers allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits with one strikeout in six innings pitched.
The four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader at Brennan Field at 12 p.m.
