ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Lewis University's baseball team lives to fight another day as it defeated William Jewell 12-6 in an elimination game of the GLVC Tournament on Friday at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo. The Flyers improve to 20-24-1 while the Cardinals end their season with a record of 30-20.
Lewis scored three runs on three hits in the top of the first. With one out,
Joe Preusser (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice) singled to right,
Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) doubled down the right field line and
Jason Krol (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) drove in Preusser with a single to right.
Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Cherokee Lebeau (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly down the right field line to score Barry to make it 2-0. The throw in got away from the catcher which allowed Alt to advance to second and Krol scored on the throw to second to make it 3-0.
WJC got two of those runs back in its half of the second on three hits. Chase Elias drove in Cole Conner with a single and later in the inning Elias scored on Ryan Dickerson's single up the middle.
The Flyers scored seven runs over the course of the next three innings to build a 10-3 run.
Three of those runs came in the third inning on two hits and an error. Barry reached on an error by the first baseman to start the inning, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Lebeau's double to left center.
David Ascencio (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) drove in Alt with a ground out to short and then
Julian Everett (Frankfort, Ill/Lincoln Way East) singled up the middle with two away to bring home Lebeau.
The Cardinals got a run back in the bottom of the third on Cameron Fliege's single to left.
Lewis tacked on two more in the fourth on a bases loaded walk to Lebeau and a single from Ascencio.
The Flyers got an RBIs from Krol and Alt in the fifth to extend the lead to seven.
William Jewell countered with two of its own in its half of the fifth on three hits. Conner drove in Fliege and Alex Epp with a single to left just over the head of Ascencio.
Lewis scored its final two runs of the contest in the eighth. Lebeau knocked in his fourth run of the contest with a single to center to drive in Alt and Everett drove in Lebeau with a double to right.
The Cardinals final run came in the ninth on Epp's single to right scoring Anthony Hansen.
The Flyers had 13 hits in the contest with eight players recording at least one hit. Lebeau, Everett, Preusser, Krol and Alt had two hits apiece while Barry, Ascencio and
Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) had one each. Lebeau drove in four runs while Krol, Ascencio and Everett had two RBI each.
Jonathon Hanscom (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) picked up the win allowing five runs, four earned, on seven this with two strikeouts in his five innings of work to improve to 5-3 on the season.
Ben Davis (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) struck out six in his three innings pitched and
Kyle Hussey (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) pitched the ninth allowing a run on two hits.
Lewis returns to the diamond on Saturday morning for another elimination game beginning at 9 a.m. at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.
