Lewis Softball Drops Pair To Maryville In Season Finale

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team was swept in a doubleheader against Maryville on Monday at the Maryville Softball Field in St. Louis. The Flyers dropped the opener 1-0 and the second game 3-1.

Game 1: Maryville 1, Lewis 0
The Saints (17-24, 12-16) scored the only run of the contest in the bottom of the seventh. They loaded the bases with one out and won it on a walk-off single to left off the bat of Taylor Duff scoring Kylie Swinney.

Lewis had seven hits in the contest and was led by Delaney Garden (Carpentersville, Ill./H.D. Jacobs) with three while Gabi Nilles (North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora), Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee), Carrie Anderson (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community) and Payton Wuske (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) had one hit each. Garden was the tough luck loser allowing the one run on 10 hits with five strikeouts to finish her season with a record of 11-10.

Game 2: Maryville 3, Lewis 1
Maryville jumped out to the early lead scoring three runs on four hits and an error in its half of the first. Swinney drove in the first run with a single to left, Melanie Nelson made it 2-0 with a single through the left side of the infield and Erin Sammelmann scored on a throwing error by Nilles.

The Flyers got one of those runs back in the third. Nichole Kiddy (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) led off the inning with a walk and came into score on Jalyn Powell's (Tolono, Ill./Unity) double down the left field line with two out in the inning. Lewis had a chance to add get closer but Powell was left stranded at third.

The Flyers had the tying runs on base with one out in the fifth inning but were left stranded. Lewis had another chance in the sixth with two on and one out but a double play ended the inning.

The Flyers had seven hits in game two with Nilles, Garden, Powell, Kiddy, Anderson, Wuske and Evie Calderon (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) all had a hit. Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) took the loss allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts to finish the season at 3-4.

Lewis ends its season with a record of 24-26, 10-18 in the GLVC.
