Lewis Men’s Basketball Upsets No. 11 Missouri - St. Louis At Home On MLK Day

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.  – The Lewis University men's basketball team cruised to a big upset win at home over No. 11 University of Missouri - St. Louis, 82-64, on Monday, Jan. 16. The Flyers shot a season-high 61.5 percent from 3-point range.

SUMMARY
In attempt to earn a much needed conference win against the No. 11-ranked team, Lewis got out to a great start, creating a 14-3 lead in the first four minutes of play. During the early stretch, the Flyers knocked down their first three 3-point attempts, two coming from Sahinkaya.
 
Lewis earned their largest lead of 17 in the first half but only held a seven point lead at halftime as UMSL was able to cut the lead to single digits with under a minute left.
 
The Flyers hot start in the first half consisted of the team shooting 7-of-9 from 3-point range and 17-for-26 (65.4 percent) from the field.
 
In the second half, Lewis continued to outplay the Tritons in nearly all facets of the game. The Flyers shot 14-of-28 from the field in the second half, while holding UMSL to 11-of-25 (44 percent) shooting. Lewis held the opposition to 2-of-13 shooting on 3-pointers in the second half, as well as forcing the Tritons to commit five turnovers.
 
UMSL was able to cut the lead to eight with three minutes remaining in regulation but Lewis answered back with a 9-0 run to seal the win.
 
The Flyers controlled the tempo outrebounding UMSL 36 to 21 for the game. They also had 19 assists to the Tritons 11.

With the three-game home stand complete and looking to continue momentum, Lewis will travel to Lebanon, Ill. to face McKendree University at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19.
