Lewis Women's Basketball Cruises Over Indianapolis Saturday

INDIANAPOLIS – The Lewis University women's basketball cruised to a 77-62 victory at Indianapolis Saturday in GLVC action. The Flyers set a new season-high in field goal percentage at .532 (25/47), shot 8/19 (.421) from three-point range, and made a season-high 19 free-throws.

SUMMARY
Lewis started fast on offense, scoring 12 points in the first four minutes of the game to grab a 12-4 lead early. The Flyers continued to pour it on in the opening quarter, going up 22-7 after a pair of free throws by Schmidt with one minute left.

UIndy notched a layup as time expired to make it 22-9 after the first. Lewis outshot the Greyhounds, going 7/14 (.500) against 4/18 (.222) for UIndy, while the Flyers were also 8/11 (.727) at the free-throw line in the opening frame.

The second quarter started a bit slower, but back-to-back threes by Schmidt and Badali increased Lewis' lead to 33-14 midway through the period. Later in the quarter, the Flyers again got two straight deep balls, this time by Hoover and Gugliuzza, to make it 43-18 as Lewis was dominating.

At halftime, the Flyers led 45-22 as Lewis was a phenomenal 8/11 (.727) from the field in the second quarter. The Flyers also made four of six three-point shots and all three of its free throws in the frame.

Both offenses came out a little slow in the third, with both teams making just one field goal in the first three minutes. From there, the Greyhounds started to chip away at the lead, getting to within 20 after a three-point shot with just under four minutes left in the quarter.

Then, Lewis got hot again, scoring nine of the next 10 points and pushing the lead to a game-high 28 after Hilber buried a three. The Flyers led 64-39 going into the fourth quarter.

UIndy controlled the fourth quarter, holding Lewis to just two field goals and five points in the first seven minutes of the final frame. The Greyhounds used that defensive push to cut the lead to 17 midway through the quarter, but then had three straight scoreless possessions of its own.

A three-pointer by Hilber at the 2:09 mark pushed the lead back up to 18 and served as the final nail in the coffin for the Flyers' victory. A late three for UIndy made the final score 77-62 in favor of Lewis.

Lewis women's basketball travels to Lakeland, Fla. for the Century Retail Christmas Classic next weekend hosted by Florida Southern. The Flyers will take on Eckerd Friday (Dec. 15) at 11 a.m. CT.
