Lewis Women's Basketball Wins Fourth Straight After Defeating William Jewell Thursday

LIBERTY, Mo. – The Lewis University women's basketball team won their fourth straight game as the Flyers defeated William Jewell, 75-48, Thursday evening (Feb. 9).

SUMMARY
Lewis started the game with back-to-back baskets from Gugliuzza and Hilber before William Jewell responded with two of their own. With both teams tied at 8 a piece with a minute left, Tara Gugliuzza (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) scored the final five points of the first quarter to give the Flyers a 13-8 lead. 

Lewis started the second quarter the same way they ended the first with a run. Badali knocked down a three while Harrison and Hart made layups to extend lead out to 20-8.

WJC would respond with five straight points to cut into the deficit before the Flyers rallied off seven in a row capped off by a three from Schmidt and a basket by Taylor Gugliuzza (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West). Lewis ended the first half by scoring the last five points including a three-pointer by Schmidt which made it 36-20 at the break.

The Cardinals tried to fight back in the contest and made it 38-24 but Lewis kept building their lead after seven straight points including five from Hilber which made it 45-24.

The Flyers extended their lead out to 26 at the end of the third quarter after Harrison made a layup and Lewis led 57-31. 

Barth-Lofton recorded the first two baskets for Lewis in the fourth quarter as the Flyers extended their lead out to 18 (61-33) in the opening minute of the fourth. Moments later, Barth-Lofton gave Lewis their largest lead of the night after making a layup to make it 67-37 with 6:16 to play. 

William Jewell tried to narrow the deficit towards the end as the Cardinals cut it down to 23 but Ryann Ogarek (New Lenox, Ill./Providence Catholic) made back-to-back baskets to end the game and gave Lewis a 75-48 victory.

Lewis will be back in action Saturday, February 11 as the Flyers travel to Kirksville, Mo. to take on Truman State starting at 1 p.m. CT.
