Lewis Men's Lacrosse Records Victories Against Walsh & Wheeling Over Weekend

NORTH CANTON, Ohio & WHEELING, WV -- The Lewis University men's lacrosse team defeated Walsh 14-9 Saturday before defeating Wheeling 21-5 Sunday.

QUARTER BREAKDOWN
FIRST QUARTER: Lewis 5, Walsh 2
  • Lewis entered the scoreboard first after Kevin Blaz (McHenry, IL/Marian Central Catholic HS) found the back of the net. 
  • Walsh quickly knotted the score up at 1-1. 
  • The Flyers went on and scored three unanswered goals from Dominic Bravata (Portage, MI/Portage Northern HS), Evan Clement (San Diego, CA/CCBC-Essex) and Boyenko. 
  • The Cavaliers were able to get one back to make it down 4-2. 
  • Boyenko recorded his second goal of the contest with less than a minute left. 
SECOND QUARTER: Walsh 5, Lewis 4
  • Walsh opened up the quarter with a goal before Lewis responded with a pair of goals from Zach Buddelmeyer (Springboro, OH/Springboro HS) and Kendrick. 
  • The Cavaliers responded with a goal of its own to make it 7-4 Lewis with 8:20. 
  • Lewis had back-to-back goals again from Boyenko and Clement again to extend it out to 9-4. 
  • Walsh closed out the final minute with three unanswered goals to make it 9-7 in favor of the Flyers.
THIRD QUARTER: Lewis 2, Walsh 2
  • Walsh carried its momentum from the first half into the second and scored the first goal to cut it down to one.
  • Clement picked up his hat trick after recording his third goal of the matchup to give Lewis a 10-8 lead. 
  • The Cavaliers quickly scored another goal to keep it a one goal contest late in the third. 
  • Buddelmeyer had his second goal of the game in the closing minutes of the third which gave Lewis a 11-9 advantage. 
FOURTH QUARTER: Lewis 3, Walsh 0
  • Lewis stepped up on defense in the fourth and did not allow a goal while scoring three of its own. 
  • Luke Schroeder (Plymouth, MN/Totino-Grace HS) was able to find the back of the net for his first of the game.
  • Bravata scored his second goal which extended the lead out to 13-9.
  • Boyenko picked up his game high fourth goal of the contest which made it 14-9.
FINAL SCORE: Lewis 14, Walsh 9

QUARTER BREAKDOWN
FIRST QUARTER: Lewis 4, Wheeling 0
  •  Lewis scored four straight in the first and held Wheeling off the board. 
  • Schroeder started the scoring in the first two minutes of the game. 
  • Anthony Mattio (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield North HS) was able to find the back of the net after picking up his first of the game. 
  • Clement made it 3-0 after recording a goal at the 6:48 mark. 
  • Speers scored his first of three goals which gave Lewis a 4-0 lead. 
SECOND QUARTER: Lewis 8, Wheeling 1
  • The Flyers outscored the Cardinals 8-1 in the second which gave Lewis a 12-1 lead. 
  • Boyenko kept up his strong weekend with his first goal of the game in the opening 61 seconds of the second period. 
  • Blaz, Buddelmeyer scored the next two goals to make it 7-0.
  • Schroeder and Boyenko recorded back-to-back goals close to each other to extend the Lewis lead to 9-0.
  • Cole Roth (Omaha, NE/Millard West HS) found the back of the net for his first goal of the game to give the Flyers a double-digit lead with 5:59 to play.
  • Wheeling was able to get on the scoreboard with 3:26 left in the first half which made it 10-1 Lewis. 
  • Lewis closed out the first half with goals from Blaz and Speers to make it 12-1 at the break. 
THIRD QUARTER: Lewis 4, Wheeling 1
  •  Lewis scored the first three goals of the second half including two from Buddelmeyer which gave him a hat trick
  • Ty DeSplinter (Fishers, IN/Hamilton Southeastern HS) added his first goal of the match in the mix. 
  • The Cardinals were able to score its second goal of the match with 4:22 to play in the third. 
  • Speers scored his third goal of the contest which made it 16-2 at the end of three. 
FOURTH QUARTER: Lewis 5, Wheeling 3
  •  Wheeling opened up the fourth quarter with a goal before Lewis responded with one of its own from Caden Fatzinger (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield North HS).
  • The Cardinals got it right back before Lewis scored two straight from Paul Ruskoski (Tulsa, OK/Bishop Kelley HS) and Wyatt Hoetker (Simpsonville, KY/Christian Academy of Louis)
  • Wheeling scored its third goal of the period and final of the contest with 3:17 left in the game.
  • Lewis recorded the final two goals of the contest with under three minutes, one from Andrew Schermerhorn (Appleton, WI/St. Francis Xavier) and Ruskoski.
FINAL SCORE: Lewis 21, Wheeling 5

No. 20 Lewis will be back in action Saturday, April 8 as the Flyers travel to Rockhurst for a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup starting at noon.
