SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- The Lewis University women's volleyball team split its season opener as the Flyers fell to Seattle Pacific, 3-0, before defeating California State-San Marcos, 3-0, Friday (Sept. 1).

SET BREAKDOWN vs. SPU
Set 1: SPU 25, Lewis 22
Seattle Pacific jumped out to a 6-2 lead before Lewis rallied for three straight points including back-to-back service aces by Fornetti. Both teams would trade points before the Flyers tied it at 8-all after an ace by Hickey.
Moments later, Lewis grabbed a 11-10 lead before the Falcons went on a 5-1 rally to grab a 15-12 lead. Lewis responded with three straight points which was capped by a kill from Alvey.
Seattle Pacific grabbed the lead with the next point and never gave it up. SPU won the first set 25-22.
Set 2: SPU 25, Lewis 21
Both teams each traded four points to start the second set after a kill from
Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs). SPU went on a 8-2 rally to grab its biggest lead of the set at 12-6.
Back-to-back kills by Schlechte got Lewis back in the set at 12-9 midway through the second set. The Falcons led 22-18 late in the set before Lewis recorded three straight kills two from Van Loo and another from Alvey.
Seattle Pacific responded by winning the last three points of its own to win 25-21.
Set 3: SPU 25, Lewis 21
Lewis jumped out to a 6-1 lead after a pair of kills by Alvey and one by
Emma O'Neill (Papillion, NE/Papillion La Vista South). SPU responded with a rally and made it 9-8 Flyers. Stenman ended the rally with a kill to make it 10-8 Lewis.
Moments later, the Flyers grabbed a 15-12 lead after a kill from
Sarah Newberry (Fairfield, Ohio/Stephen T Badin). The Falcons bounced back and scored three straight points to make it 15-all.
Both teams would trade five points each to make it 20-20 late in the set before SPU scored four straight to grab a 24-20 lead. Schlechte tried to get the Flyers back in the match after recording the next point by kill by the Falcons scored the ensuing point to win the match.

Set 1: Lewis 25, CSSM 17
Both teams each scored three points to start the contest then Stenman recorded a kill to give the Flyers a 4-3 lead. The teams traded points which made it tied 9-9.
Lewis rallied and scored five straight which was capped off by a kill from Van Loo. CSSM recorded the next point before the Flyers scored three more in a row after an ace from Gubera which made it 17-10.
The Flyers would hold onto its margin throughout the rest of the set. Van Loo gave Lewis a 25-17 set victory after recording a kill.
Set 2: Lewis 25, CSSM 20
Both teams each scored nine points to start the set before CSSM scored three straight which gave them a 12-9 lead. Lewis rallied for five straight points including a block from O'Neill, giving the Flyers a 14-12 lead.
The Cougars regained the lead (16-15) after scoring the next four out of five points. Lewis bounced back and grabbed a 23-18 lead which helped carry them the rest of the set.
Van Loo ended the second set the same way she did the first with a kill as the Flyers won 25-20.
Set 3: Lewis 25, CSSM 13
The third set was all Lewis as the Flyers jumped out to a 8-4 lead after a service ace from O'Neill. CCSM tried to respond and cut it down to 12-10 but Lewis had the answer.
The Flyers ended up outscoring the Cougars 7-1 after the block from O'Neill made it 19-11. CSSM cut it down to 21-13 in favor of Lewis but the Flyers scored four straight to win the third set 25-13 to win the match.

The Lewis University Flyers will be back in action Saturday, September 2 as the Flyers compete in the Point Loma Seaside Invitational and take on Point Loma at 1:30 p.m. then Biola at 6:30 p.m. CT.
