SET BREAKDOWN vs. Quincy University
Set 1: Quincy 25, Lewis 19
To start the game, Quincy took the first points thanks to a kill by Beretti. Lewis scored the next point to get on the board and even the contest before jumping to a three-point lead out ahead of the Hawks 5-2.
This was followed by back-and-forth scoring from the Flyers and the Hawks until Quincy evened the score with a Lewis attacking error and kill by Beretti. After some more alternating points, both teams went on separate three-point stretches. For Lewis, back-to-back kills by Hannah Alvey (Mapleton, Ill./Illinois Central College) and a Quincy attacking error and a kill by Beretti and two more from Wijnbergen for Quincy push the score to 14-13.
Lewis kept the scoring close until a three-point streak by the Hawks and eventually an unanswered four-point stretch to close out the first set 25-19.
Set 2: Quincy 25, Lewis 21
Moving into the second set, the Hawks opened the contest with a three-point cushion against the Flyers leading 6-3. The Flyers responded with two kills by Mallory Januski (Bourbonnais, Ill./Valparaiso) to bring the score even at 9-9.
After a Lewis serving error, the Flyers managed to go on a commanding four-point run to push ahead 13-10 midway through the set. The Hawks were later able to respond with a run of their own with two kills by Wijnbergen and a Lewis attack error, retaking the lead 15-14.
After a Lewis kill by Alvey to make the score 21-18, the Hawks went on a controlling seven point run to run away with the set and jump back ahead of the Flyers with a concluding score of 25-21.
Set 3: Quincy 25, Lewis 19
The third set began with a point for each team after a Quincy kill by Matzke followed by a Lewis kill by Ray. The set continued with back and forth scoring until the Hawks created a sizable lead after going on a six-point unanswered run early on pushing ahead 9-4.
After the run, the Hawks were able to continue their scoring over Lewis later extending their lead to 20-13 after a serving ace by Van Baars. A Gracie Schultz (Minonk, Ill./Fieldcrest High School) kill brought the momentum back to the Flyers driving the way towards a 6-2 run.
Bringing the score back to within three, Lewis attempted to take the third set with back-to-back kills by Ray and Stefanski but came up short with Quincy finishing with a three-point run to end the set 25-19 and close the match.
