ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- The Lewis University women's volleyball team lost 3-2 Saturday night after an intense match against Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) opponent Maryville.

SET BREAKDOWN vs. Maryville
Set 1: Maryville 25, Lewis 23
Maryville scored the first point of the match off of an attack error by Januski. Lewis turned around an scored six points to the Saints' one thanks to two errors and kills by Alvey, Buxton and Ray with a combined block by Buxton and Ray. Lewis held a good lead and the set went back and forth with the Flyers roughly holding a four point lead.
Lewis held a 16-10 lead after two kills from Alvey and Ray, what followed was seven point run from the Saints which gained them the lead. Both teams exchanged a two point run which saw Lewis momentarily gain the lead from a kill by Alvey and a Maryville attack error. The Flyers put together a few more points to round out the set, but the Saints took the first victory of the afternoon.
Set 2: Lewis 25, Maryville 22
A block by Januski started the second set of with a Flyers lead, the Saints responded with a block of their own to tie it at one. After some short exchanges Lewis went on a four point run from two attack errors and two kills by Ray. The Saints interrupted the run with a quick point, but the Flyers hit the scoreboard with another four point run, this time with kills by Stefanski, Alvey and Ray with a block by Ray and Alvey.
The Saints put up a few sizable runs to make the set closer, but thanks to a kill by Alvey and a Saints attack error, the Flyers held a 15-9 lead. The two squads battled across the net trading points. The Saints continued to creep towards the Flyers but Lewis held on long enough for Ray to fire a kill to the floor, ending set two.
Set 3: Lewis 25, Maryville 20
A ball off the hands of Buxton was blocked to give Maryville the first point of set umber three, Lewis came back with a three point run off of a service error and two kills by Ray and Stefanski. The Flyers put up a healthy diet of two point runs which gave themselves a good cushion between them and the Saints
After some short runs by Maryville, the game was tied at 17. A Saints attack error and a kill from Buxton allowed for Lewis to begin pulling away. A three point run off of two kills by Ray and a solo kill by
Keegan Carey (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) was halted by a Lewis service error. Fortunately a Saints' service error and a kill from Alvey gave Lewis the lead and the set three win.
Set 4: Maryville 25, Lewis 23
A set by King to Stefanski for a kill began set four, followed by a Saints' attack error to give Lewis an early two point lead. Lewis continued to scatter points across the board when they put up a three point run off of a service error and kills by Ray and Alvey. Maryville put up a solo point in response, but the Flyers attacked again with another three point run thanks to a Alvey-Ray block, Saints's attack error and a Januski kill. Once again Maryville put up one point only for Lewis to respond with a three point run from two attack errors and a kill by Alvey.
Maryville battled back to keep the set within striking distance for themselves. The Saints then went on an eight point run to make it an 18-16 Lewis lead. Both teams traded points and runs to make the set highly competitive. Finally two kills by Ray broke up two three point runs by Maryville, but it was not enough, and the Saints took set four.
Set 4: Maryville 15, Lewis 11
The epic conclusion of the toughly fought match began with a kill from Ray off of King assist. However the Saints put up a barrage of points to make the set 7-2 in Maryville's favor.
Points were traded back and forth and Lewis battled to put eleven on the board, but a block by Januski and Buxton would be the last point the Flyers saw during the match. Maryville landed a final kill and ended the match 3 sets to 2.

After three straight days of volleyball, the Flyers get a few days off before they head to Fayette, Iowa to take on Upper Iowa on Nov. 8th at 6:00 PM CST.
