Lewis Baseball Splits Doubleheader Saturday; Wins Series at Cedarville

XENIA, Ohio - The Lewis University baseball team split its doubleheader at Cedarville Saturday (March 2), losing the first game 14-6 before winning game two, 5-4. With the split, the Flyers take the series two games to one.

GAME 1 TEAM RECORDS
Lewis 4-6 | Cedarville 3-8

GAME 1 SUMMARY
Lewis struck with a run in the top of the first, as Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) led off with a single and later scored on Tony Fleischauer's (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) single. Cedarville responded with two runs on two walks, a hit batter, and a single in the bottom of the second.

The Flyers tied the game in the third, with Angelo Cantello singling home Cain Headrick (Custer Park, Ill./Providence Catholic), but the Yellow Jackets scored five in the bottom half and would lead for the rest of the game. After a walk and a home run started the inning, Lewis took Luke Brown (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) out, finishing with four runs allowed on two hits, three walks and two hit batters with four strikeouts, taking the loss (0-1).

A three-run homer by Cedarville later in the inning made it 7-2. Fox homered in the top of the fourth, and back-to-back doubles by Jason Krol (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) and Geoge Bilecki led to two more runs for the Flyers in the fifth to make the score 7-5, but that was as close as Lewis would get.

The Yellow Jackets scored three runs each in the sixth and seventh innings to stretch the lead to 13-5. Fox drilled another solo long ball in the eighth, and Cedarville matched it with a run in the bottom half to bring the final score to 14-6.

GAME 2 TEAM RECORDS
Lewis 5-6 | Cedarville 3-9

GAME 2 SUMMARY
Game two was scoreless through four innings, as Dylan Wolff (Joliet, Ill.) was lights out for the Flyers on the mound. In the top of the fifth, Fleischauer hit a two-RBI double and later scored on a single by Bilecki to make it 3-0 Lewis.

The Flyers got the bats going again in the top of the sixth, as Michael Alt (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) hit an RBI triple to score Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin), and then Mikey Kocen (Beach Park, Ill.) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Alt and make it 5-0. A home run, error and two doubles chased Wolff from the game in the bottom half, as he finished with five-plus innings pitched and four runs allowed (three earned) on seven hits and no walks with four strikeouts, taking the win (2-0).

Collin Amsden (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) came in for Wolff, and shut things down the rest of the way after that four-run burst for Cedarville in the sixth. The Yellow Jackets didn't get a runner in scoring position for the rest of the game, as Amsden earned his second save of the year by going four innings and allowing no runs on three hits and no walks with seven strikeouts.
