Lewis Women’s Volleyball Splits Pair of Matches in New York Saturday

QUEENS, N.Y. -- The (RV) Lewis University women's volleyball team split a pair of contests at Queens College Saturday (Sept. 20) as the Flyers lost to Bentley 3-1 then defeated Queens 3-1.

SET BREAKDOWN vs. Bentley
SET 1: Lewis 27, Bentley 25

The match started with Lewis going down two points early, but strong defense by Januski allowed Lewis to go up 3-2. The run was broken up by Bentley, only for Lewis to go on another 3 point run, making it 6-3.

After some back and forth, Bentley went on a four point run to tie the set at 8-8.

The set stayed within two points for the remainder of the match with both teams looking to pull further ahead. With the set tied at 24-24, a kill by Bella Ray (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic) (Plainfield, Ill/Joliet Catholic) made Lewis the first team to 25. After a final point from Bentley, a service error and a Kill by Alvey gave the first set to Lewis.

Set 2: Bentley 25, Lewis 17
Bentley started the set hot immediately going up 4-0 to start. Lewis did a good job in response putting up three points off of two kills by Lauren Buxton (Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains) (Springfield, Ill/Pleasant Plains) and an attack error by Bentley. 

Lewis would have another four point run later in the set with kills by Buxton and Alvey. However they would not be able to stop Bentley from making deep runs throughout the rest of the set.  

Set 3: Bentley 25, Lewis 22
The third set began with a kill by Buxton to give Lewis the early lead. Both teams exchanged points until Bentley went on a three point run which moved Lewis behind. 

Lewis responded with a five point run which included a serving ace from Gubera and two kills from Ray and Natalie Stefanski (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet West) (Plainfield, Ill/Joliet West). 

The Flyers held onto a narrow lead at 13-11 after a kill by King. Bentley then went on a five point unanswered run to put Lewis behind.

After a handful of errors by Bentley, the set was tied at 18. A few more errors by Bentley and kills by Alvey and Januski kept the set close however Lewis was never able to pull ahead and the third set went to Bentley.

Set 4: Bentley 25, Lewis 20
The final set of the match started with both teams scoring back and forth with Lewis putting up several small runs with kills from Ray and Olivia Opstad (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) (Bloomington, Minn/Thomas Jefferson) and a serving ace by Alvey. 

Bentley was able to tie the game at ten, the set was gridlocked until Bentley slowly began to pull ahead with runs larger than what Lewis was able to piece together. 

Lewis was unable to close the gap during the fourth set and Bentley walked away with the match victory.

Set 1: Lewis 25, Queens 21
The match started with Queens taking early control with a 6-3 lead. Lewis was able to battle back thanks to a block by Ray with a kill from Stefanski and with Queens up 7-6 the Flyers started to build some momentum.'


Lewis went on a four point run thanks to a Kill by Stefanski, a block by Ray, a service ace, and a kill by Januski, bringing them to a 10-7 lead. Both teams exchanged points but Lewis held a steady lead going into the final points of the set.


When Lewis was at the 24 point mark, Queens was able to spark a short rally to make the set 24-21. Januski was finally able to end the first set with a strong kill off of the assist from King.

Set 2: Lewis 25, Queens 20
Queens started the second set off with a three point run which ended from an attack error. Queens went on two point run after which was broken up by Avery Holubar (Bargersville, Ind./Center Grove) (Bargersville, Ind/Center Grove), Lewis would allow Queens to consecutively score only once more throughout the set. 


Lewis had several two score runs during the set, and two three point runs, the first occurring thanks to kills by Alvey, Holubar, and Januski. 


With Lewis leading 22-20, Queens committed two attack errors followed by another kill from Alvey, and Lewis claimed set number two.


Set 3: Queens 25, Lewis 21
Once again Queens won the race to the scoreboard by putting up two quick points and would hold a lead for the remainder of the set. Lewis was able to keep the set close with several three point runs. The Flyers forced several attacking errors giving themselves a boost for a comeback, but they were unable to secure set three.


Set 4: Lewis 25, Queens 17
Queens scored first again in the fourth set, with Lewis quickly responding with a point of their own. Both teams went back and forth with identical runs and points until the game was tied at five. 


Lewis then began to pull ahead of Queens by having extended runs while quickly snuffing out any resistance from their opponents offense. When the set was 15-14 in favor of the Flyers, Lewis went on a seven point run, summed up by a handful of errors, a serving ace from Opstad, and kills from Ray and Stefanski.


A kill by Alvey off of the assist from Opstad ended the set 25-17.

Lewis will be back in action and begin GLVC play Friday, September 27 as the Flyers travel to Southwest Baptist starting at 6 p.m. CT.
