Romeoville, Ill. – Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium, the Lewis Flyers defeated Southwest Baptist 2-1 in GLVC action.
With the result, Lewis improves to 4-1-4 (3-1-2 GLVC), while Southwest Baptist falls to 3-7-1 (1-5-1 GLVC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Flyers opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Reese Capion (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North High School) found the back of the net with a strike to the high right corner, giving Lewis an early 1-0 advantage.
In the second half, Morgan Krupp (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay High School) doubled the Flyers' lead in the 52nd minute, firing home a shot to the upper left to make it 2-0.
Southwest Baptist responded in the 80th minute as they scored to cut the deficit in half, but Lewis' back line held firm the rest of the way to preserve the 2-1 victory.
Lewis dominated the stat sheet, out shooting SBU 20-6 overall and 10-3 in shots on goal. The Flyers also held a 6-4 edge in corners. Discipline was key as well, Lewis committed just five fouls compared to seven by the Bearcats, who also saw a player sent off with a red card. In goal, Josie Graziosi (Galena, OH/Big Walnut) finished with two saves for Lewis.
MATCH NOTES
- Capion's first-half tally was her first goal of the season.
- Krupp scored her team-leading third goal of the year.
