Box Score Liberty, Mo. - The Lewis University women's volleyball team started their weekend with a 3-0 road sweep of William Jewell Friday evening at the Mabee Center.
With the win, the Flyers improved to 14-11 (5-5 GLVC) while the Cardinals dipped to 4-20 (0-10 GLVC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Flyers attacked the Cardinals early in the first set as they commanded a 14-7 lead midway through the opening staza. The two sides exchanged the next handful of scores with William Jewell getting to within five, 19-14. That was as close as the Cardinals got as consecutive kills from freshman Ann Kelly Veilkov sparked a 5-1 run that sent Lewis ahead, 24-15. Lewis sealed the set with a kill from senior
Emma O'Neill (Papillion, Neb./Papillion La Vista South) three points later to win, 25-17 and take a 1-0 match lead.
Down 8-6 in the second set, the red and white took the lead away from the hosts for good as a kill from junior
Lauren Buxton (Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains) uncorked a 5-0 run that gave Lewis an 11-8 edge. The two sides exchanged scores with William Jewell again trimming the Lewis advantage now to just two, 17-15. Still, the Flyers kept the host Cardinals at bay and held them to just four points the remainder of the way to win, 25-19 and take a 2-0 match lead.
The Flyers sealed the 3-0 match victory as they used a .362 hitting percentage compared to just . 114 for William Jewell to win, 25-15. Lewis tallied the final seven points of the match as well.
Senior
Mya Bajramovic (Cary, Ill./West Virginia Wesleyan) led Lewis with 12 kills while Buxton provided 10 of her own along with a team-best 15 digs. Junior
Lily King (Channahon, Ill./Kent State) dished out 23 assists while at the net, fellow junior
Sarah Newberry (Fairfield, Ohio/Stephen T Badin) led the red and white with three blocks. As a team, Lewis hit a clip of .344 (56-13-125) compared to .140 (27-11-114) for William Jewell.
Mary Bartlett paced William Jewell with eight kills and Reaghan Bible amassed 21 assists. Emma Lea Benny tallied 13 digs in the loss.
MATCH NOTES
- - Lewis is now 14-0 all-time against William Jewell.
- - This is the first time this season Bajramovic led the Flyers in kills
- - Sophomore Reese Renfrow (Prosper, Texas/Prosper High School) made her first appearance since Oct. 18 against Ferris State.
