FAYETTE, Iowa. -- The Lewis University men's basketball team were unable to come away with the victory as Upper Iowa defeated the Flyers 103-99 in double overtime Saturday (March 1).

GAME SUMMARY
Lewis jumped out to an early 10-1 lead in the first three minutes of the contest. Upper Iowa was able to make its first basket of the game with a three-pointer.
The Flyers responded with a three from
Devon Vanderheydt (Washington, Ill./Washington) to make it nine points again early on. Upper Iowa narrowed it to a five-point game until Lewis went on a 9-1 run that gave the Flyers a 24-11 lead.
Moments later, Lewis extended its lead to 33-24 with 4:19 to play in the half. Upper Iowa closed out the half on a 9-3 run, including a three-pointer in the closing seconds go into the break
with the Flyers ahead 36-33.
Upper Iowa opened the second half on a 7-2 run, giving the Peacocks a 40-38 advantage. Stroud recorded four straight points for the Flyers to keep it tied with 16:19 left in the contest.
UIU then hit back-to-back three-pointers for a 48-42 lead. Consecutive layups by
Cem Kirciman (Istanbul, Turkey/Wisconsin-Green Bay) and Stroud made it a one-point game (59-58) with 10:07 remaining in the game.
The Peacocks proceeded to score eight unanswered points, giving them a 67-58 lead with at the 8:57 mark. Lewis scored five straight points including an and-one from Stroud to make it a four-point game at 67-63.
Moments later, Stroud completed another three-point play to make it a two-point game with 6:38 to play. Sayles Jr. came up clutch down the stretch after scoring six straight points, including a layup as time expired in regulation to force overtime.
Both teams went back-and-forth in the first overtime. The Peacocks were ahead 92-89 with under 30 seconds remaining.
Jaylin Gibson (Evanston,IL/Evanston Township) came up big after drawing the contact while attempting a three and went to the line to shoot free throws. Gibson forced the second overtime after hitting three clutch free throws to tie the game at 92-92.
In the second overtime, Stroud hit a layup to make it 97-95 in favor of the Flyers. The Peacocks closed out the contest of on a 8-2 run in the final three minutes to win it 103-99.

Lewis will be back in action for the GLVC Men's Basketball Tournament set for Thursday, March 6-Sunday, March 9. The Flyers drew the fifth seed and will take on No. 4 seed Lincoln Friday, March 7 starting at noon CT.
