ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University men's soccer team walked away with their first conference win against the Quincy Hawks Sunday evening.
Lewis moves to 2-0-2 with the win while Quincy with their first loss of the years falls to 2-1-1.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Flyers started off early with a some long possessions and shot attempts, followed up by strong defensive plays to prevent Quincy from building any offensive momentum.
At the 18:24 mark,
Jaden Jaime (Kankakee, Ill./Herscher) with a clear lane of traffic was fouled form behind while in the box looking towards the goal.
Makonnen Stampley (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) would then walk to the dot for a penalty shot for a chance to put the Flyers up one. With a stutter step and slow walk forwards, Stampley caught the Hawks goalie guessing, and lined a ball to the right side of the net and put Lewis ahead 1-0.
This would conclude the scoring for the match but strong performances from
Roman Hernandez (Aurora, Ill./Aurora East),
Mikey Revell (Largo, Maryland/Bishop McNamara) and
Lucas Lloyd (Ontario, Canada/Bishop Tonnos) helped Lewis control the ball and the clock to keep Quincy off the scoreboard.
Yoan Zagorov (Sofia, Bulgaria) played a full 90 minutes for the Flyers with one save and picked off a pass from a late Hawks corner kick, which ultimatley sealed the game. Quincy keeper Jake Offerman played a full 90 as well, allowing the one goal with two saves.Â
GAME NOTES
- Stampley earned his first goal and points of the season, now sitting at 1 and 2 respectively.Â
- Zagorov is now the conference leader for shutouts per game with three and goals allowed against average with .50.
- This game continued a seven year streak where the Flyers have either beaten or tied the hawks, in that time the Flyers are 4-2-0.Â
