Box Score Arlington Heights, Ill. – Two late first half goals proved to be the difference as the Lewis University women's soccer team defeated Roosevelt, 3-2, in the first game of the 2025 season for both teams.
Anna Larson (Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk),
Morgan Krupp (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay High School) and
Maggie Maher (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) accounted for the three Lewis goals while in net,
Josie Graziosi (Galena, OH/Big Walnut) made two saves in her season debut for the Flyers. As for Roosevelt, Carisma Rosales led the Lakers with three total points (1G, 1A) while Angelina Vazquez made seven saves in the losing effort. Both keepers played the full 90 minutes as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Roosevelt opened the scoring the 13th minute as Rosales collected a pass from Daisy Garcia in the midfield before getting past the Lewis defense and slotting the ball into the back of the net for the first score of the evening.
The hosts were able to keep the red and white off the board until the 42nd minute when a cross from
Jaylin Sustr (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) found the foot of Maher in the box. The sophomore forward controlled the ball and ran past her defender before forcing the ball past the goal line to even the match, 1-1.
Lewis had one more trick up their sleeve before the half ended as less than two minutes later, Krupp registered her first goal of the season after receiving a pass from
Isabella Vargas (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) to put the Flyers ahead, 2-1. Neither side scored before the half ended with Lewis maintaining their 2-1 edge.
Lewis started the second half with a bang as Larson was at the receiving end of a long cross inside the box which she lofted over the outstretched arm of the Roosevelt keeper to double the Flyers lead, 3-1.
Roosevelt made one last push to comeback in the game as Daisy Hernandez-Loya found the back of the net in the 75th minute to make it a 3-2 contest.
Still, the Flyers survived the Lakers late match pressure to leave with a 3-2 season-opening road win.
