Flyers Make it Eight Straight Wins With 57-39 Victory Over William Jewell

Baggs Jr. posts program-record 11 blocks in three-set match

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis University women's basketball team won its eighth straight game Saturday (Jan. 17), defeating William Jewell 73-55 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest. Lewis moves to 10-6 overall, 6-2 in the GLVC.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
Mercy Lasu (Winnipeg, Canada/D'Youville) paced the Flyers with 15 points, while Yahaira Bueno (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) had 12 points and Mallory Ramage (Mattoon, Ill./Loyola Chicago) scored 11 points. Kree Nunnally (Crystal Lake, Ill./Example Academy) totaled seven rebounds, while Ally Cesarini (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) had four steals.
 
Alex McGarrah led William Jewell (0-15, 0-9) with 16 points.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 5-4 lead before the Flyers took the lead for good on a layup by Ramage. Lasu followed with a three-pointer to give Lewis a 9-5 advantage. The teams went traded baskets for much of the rest of the quarter until a Cesarini layup gave the Flyers an 18-11 lead after one quarter.
 
Lewis opened the second quarter with the first nine points to extend the run to 15-0 to take a 30-11 lead with 5:31 remaining in the half. The Cardinals finally got on the board with 5:18 left in the second quarter.
 
Lewis responded with five straight points to make it a 20-2 run and give it a 35-13 lead. The Flyers led 37-19 at the half.
 
William Jewell got back to within 15 points at 39-24 before a 15-5 Lewis run made it 54-29 with 2:52 remaining in the third quarter. Lewis built its lead to 29 points at 60-31 before taking a 60-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
The Flyers built their lead back up to 29 points at 64-35, but the Cardinals rallied late to make it a 73-55 final.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Cesarini continued her program-record streak of four or more steals to nine in a row, totaling 51 in that span.
  • Bueno hit double figures scoring for a team-best 11th time on the season.
  • Lewis shot 30-of-61 (49.2%) from the floor, while limiting the Cardinals to 21-54 (38.9%) shooting.

Lewis goes back on the road to Kansas City, Missouri to take on Rockhurst Thursday (Jan. 22) at 5:30 p.m.
